This volume contains Hurwitz's seminal paper on stability theorem, and a collection of papers on its historical development. The emphasis, however, is on modern stability theory and its applications in control theory and numerical mathematics. Special attention is given to stability of linear and nonlinear problems, time-dependent systems, discretizations of ordinary and partial differential equations, systems with time delay and multi-dimensional systems. In addition, robust stability, pole placement and problems related to the stability radius are considered.
