Chessmen of Mars

Complete and unabridged, with 55 full-page plates by John Martin, Frederic Edwin Church and Odilon Redon. Tara of Helium, who refuses the man she is meant to marry, is carried by a storm to a country where living heads ride headless bodies bred for the purpose. Burroughs invented the Kaldanes and the game of jetan for this book, and printed the rules of the game as an appendix so that readers could play it. The chess match at the end is played with living men on a squared field, and the pieces know what a lost square costs. Fifty-five plates, among them storm pieces by Frederic Edwin Church and Charles Cooper Henderson, carry the weather that drives Tara across the world and the strange skies above it.
