Conquête ottomane de l’Égypte (1517) is the first collective work that deals with Selīm Ist’s crushing victory over the Mamluks, which made the Ottoman sultanate into the sole remaining Muslim power in the eastern Mediterranean, and reduced Egypt to the rank of a province. The book offers new insights into this major event by using a wide range of Ottoman and Arabic as well as Western sources. These essays in French and English collected by Benjamin Lellouch and Nicolas Michel examine to what extent the Ottoman conquest altered the structures of Egyptian society, power relations, literature, arts and material culture. They explore both its backgrounds and geopolitical aftermath, and reconstruct its echoes - loud at first, then gradually fading out - in the Middle East, Italy, and the Mediterranean.

Benjamin Lellouch est maître de conférences à l'Université Paris-8. Il a travaillé sur l'historiographie turque et arabe de la conquête ottomane de l'Égypte (Les Ottomans en Égypte. Historiens et conquérants au XVIe siècle, Peeters, 2006). Nicolas Michel est maître de conférences à Aix-Marseille Université. Il a travaillé sur les sociétés rurales du Maroc ( Une économie de subsistances. Le Maroc précolonial, IFAO, 1997), puis de l’Égypte ottomane, à laquelle il se consacre depuis près de vingt ans. Benjamin Lellouch is assistant professor at the University of Paris-8. His works have dealt with the Turkish and Arabic historiography of the Ottoman conquest of Egypt (Les Ottomans en Égypte. Historiens et conquérants au XVIe siècle, Peeters, 2006). Nicolas Michel is assistant professor at the Aix-Marseille University. He previously worked on the rural societies in Morocco (Une économie de subsistances. Le Maroc précolonial, IFAO, 1997), then, for nearly twenty years, on rural Ottoman Egypt.
