The edited volume Transcultural Influences in Soviet and Post-Soviet Animation provides an innovative perspective on animation from the region as a transcultural phenomenon that was influenced by a complex interplay of international and internal processes. Covering the 1930s to the 2010s, it presents case studies that showcase the effects of international influences on animation, such as adaptations and reinterpretation of Western literary sources and figures (Pinocchio, Winnie-the-Pooh, Mowgli, and Greek myths, among others) and the borrowing of technology and methods (from Disney and Fleischer Studios). It also traces the interconnected development of animation in the Soviet republics, while problematizing the traditional view on Soviet animation as limited to that produced at Soyuzmultfilm, the central studio located in Moscow. The book will be of interest to scholars of film and animation; those interested in Soviet and post-Soviet studies, Slavic studies, and children’s literature in the former USSR.
