Not sure. I read this book through translation, so don't take my opinion too seriously. A translation. Which, of course, is as poor as a rose seller with broken shoes in the streets of Strasburg. Still. Some sentences are strong, well written. I like beautiful sentences, that's the reason I read.. Sentences. There were some good ones, in there, if you look close.
The story is about a smart, funny, young woman, growing up in Sweden, struggling with expectations she has, from the world (especially from her parents). Whatever she achieves, it's never good enough. It's never good enough. Never. She, becoming older, uses men and sex, to cover up her emotional junkyard of what you need to be, on earth. To find some cheap, sweaty satisfaction and appreciation, there. In the mean time she reads difficult books and gets smarter. Very smart. Greek, Latin, Spanish. Very smart. Bla bla bla bla..
What I disliked the most is how the main figure victimizes herself. She voluntarily, and cheerfully, walks upon a cliff, looks down, smiles a crazy smile, jumps, jumps and blames her broken back to gravity.. Self-pity afterwards. That's not much fun to read. She is the big sad hero, in her own world.
The main figure, Sonia Soledad, blames circumstances and takes no responsibility for her own actions, about the result of that in her life. Everything seems to 'happen to her.' She chooses to keep one away from her own emotional needs and very often describes intimate contact with another person as dumb and superficial sexual. Yeah. And then, afterwards, she blames men, to be superficial and sex-minded.
Men are more than a half-hard drunk cock in a cheap condom, but she seems to want to reduce that to that, for her own good. She reduces men to dumb sex. Like if you are in a lower order and when you do not have big, fat tits or a cunt, to paraphrase Nietzsche, you are some sort of untermensch. She uses men, and then blames men, for using her.
There is no progress, in the main figure, Sonia Soledad. She believes in her made up truths, again, yeah, frustrating to read. And that's not feminism or #metoo, that's inequality, and unfair towards men, I think. That's just finger pointing. I am good and you are bad, very bad. But still, 3 stars. Because if you look away from the exploited self-pity, there are some clear, honest, strong sentences in there.
