UMAR IBN AL-KHATTAB AND THE FRACTURE OF AUTHORITY Power, Politics, and the Fracture of the Early Muslim Community

A pen that was never brought. An army that never marched. A question that changed history. In the last days of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, two things were left unfinished: an army waiting outside Medina, and a document that was never written. Within hours of his death, the community had to decide who would lead it.How did that decision happen? Who made it, and why? And why do Muslims still feel its consequences fourteen centuries later?Umar ibn al-Khattab and the Fracture of Authority follows the man at the centre of that story. It traces the road from the Prophet's side, through Saqifah and the caliphate of Abu Bakr, to the shura that chose Uthman. It then follows the civil wars that broke the community apart: Ali's caliphate, Mu'awiya's kingdom, and Karbala.Inside you will find:The Sunni reports on Hudaybiyyah, Tabuk, Ghadir Khumm, Usama's army and the "e;pen and paper"e; hadith, with the many chains of narration set out in fullA clear look at what the sources say about the Saqifah meeting, the succession of Abu Bakr, and Umar's designation of his own successorEvery claim traced to Sunni sources only: al-Bukhari, Muslim, Ibn Sa'd, al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, Ibn Hajar and others, with over 160 footnotesWeak reports named as weak, and interpretation kept separate from established factThis is not a book that sanctifies power, and it does not condemn it either. It asks hard questions and stays inside the tradition's own evidence. It closes with a call for Muslim unity that does not distort history, resting on one principle: our religion is divine, and our history is human. For readers of Islamic history, early Islam and the Rashidun caliphs, the Sunni–Shia question, political thought, and the roots of authority in the Muslim world.
