Beskrivning
After the Guns: Rebuilding the Lives a War Leaves Behind is a book about what happens after a war officially ends — when the soldiers come home, the headlines move on, and the real cost begins to appear inside families, hospitals, courts, workplaces and communities.Using the war in Ukraine as its central contemporary lens, the book argues that both Ukraine and Russia will face a vast reintegration challenge once the fighting stops. The political responsibility for the war is not the same on both sides, and the book does not treat aggressor and defender as morally equivalent. But trauma, moral injury, addiction, family breakdown and loss of purpose will still affect returning soldiers and the societies expected to absorb them. The book begins with the Soviet war in Afghanistan, where hundreds of thousands of veterans came home to a state that had little language for their suffering and little capacity to help them. It then follows the same pattern across later wars: governments count weapons, casualties and pensions, but often miss the slower costs of damaged minds, broken marriages, lost work, substance abuse, crime and unpaid family care.At its heart, After the Guns is about the "e;second war"e; — the one fought after the first one ends. It explores PTSD, moral injury, alcohol abuse, identity loss and the hidden fiscal liabilities that can last for decades. It also argues that honouring veterans is not enough. Real reintegration requires planning, treatment, family support, employment pathways, honest accounting and institutions capable of acting before the crisis becomes unavoidable. This is a warning and a call to prepare. A ceasefire may stop the shooting, but it does not rebuild lives. If governments fail to plan for the people war sends home, they do not get a smaller problem. They get a delayed one.
