In recent decades, community in the United States has been weakening at all levels. For many Christian congregations, both Protestant and Catholic, their role in building community, both internally and in its neighborhood, has shifted from being a trusted institution and natural connector, to competing for people’s attention as one club among many. Church is a club that many are rejecting for a variety of reasons. Because all people need community to live full, joyful, and flourishing lives, churches can and must reclaim their community-building role. Theological and sociological reflection on cases studies from seven U.S. churches illustrate best practices, challenges, and opportunities for congregations that aim to build community intentionally. Fresh thinking and new strategies are needed to bolster community in the current culture; Faith in Community offers such insights.
