An unprecedented exploration of Japanese women artists and their impact on the global artistic landscape, from the post-war period to the turn of the twenty-first century Taking inspiration from the Japanese word for 'breaking free,' Kaiho: Japanese Women Artists after 1945 reveals the essential role of women artists from Japan and its global communities. Featuring the work of 39 artists – from Ruth Asawa, Yayoi Kusama and Tomie Ohtake to Atsuko Tanaka and Yoko Ono – this deeply researched, expansive survey illustrates the radical, yet often overlooked contributions of Japanese women to global postwar art movements and contemporary art. Kaiho covers a wide breadth of media, including sculpture, painting, installation, photography, ceramics, film, and performance. Looking at dynamic cultural exchanges and the forgotten margins of modernism, the book invites readers to explore new modes of artistic expression that emerged in post-war Japan and its transnational networks across  Asia, Europe, the United States and Brazil . Some of the artists are quite familiar to us today, while many lesser-known artists offer a fresh perspective into the creative output during this time period. Insightful texts dive into themes such as feminism, pedagogy, Fluxus, Gutai, the relationship between fashion and art-making, Japanese women artists in 1960s New York, environmental consciousness, and beyond. Strikingly designed and brought to life through more than 300 images, Kaiho is an important record of Japanese visual culture and the legacy of its transformative women artists.

This volume presents an array of different case studies which take as primary material data sourced from the NOW (‘New and Old Worlds’) database of fossil mammals. The NOW database was one of the very first large paleobiological databases, and since 1996 it has been expanded from including mainly Neogene European land mammals to cover the entire Cenozoic at a global scale. In the last two decades the number of works that are based in the use of huge databases to explore ecological and evolutionary questions has increased exponentially, and even though the importance of big data in paleobiological research has been outlined in selected chapters of general works, no volume has appeared before this one which solely focuses on the databases as a primary source in reconstructing the past. The purpose of this book is to provide an illustrative volume showing the importance of big data in paleobiological research, and presenting a broad array of unpublished examples and case studies. The book is mainly aimed to professional palaeobiologists working with Cenozoic land mammals, but the scope of the book is broad enough to fit the interest for evolutionary biologists, paleoclimatologists and paleoecologists. The volume is divided in four parts. The first part includes two chapters on the development of large paleobiological databases, providing a first-hand account on the logic and the functioning of these databases. This is a much-needed perspective which is ignored by most researchers and users of such databases and, even if centered in the NOW database, the lessons that can be learned from this part can be extended to other examples. After this introductory part, the body of the book follows and is divided into three parts: patterns in regional faunas; large scale patterns and processes; and ecological, biogeographical and evolutionary patterns of key taxa. Each chapter is written by well-known specialists in the field, withsome participation of members of the NOW advisory board. The array of selected mammal taxa ranges from carnivores, equids, ruminants and rodents to the genus Homo. The topics studied also include the diversification and radiation of major clades, large-scale paleobiogeographical patterns, the evolution of ecomorphological patterns and paleobiological problems such as evolution of body size or species longevity. In most cases the results are discussed in relation to protracted environmental or paleogeographic changes.

Power, Desire, Social Justice, Representation, Beauty and Compassion Widely considered to be one of the most influential American living artists, Carrie Mae Weems has developed a practice celebrated for her exploration of cultural identity, power dynamics, desire, intimacy and social justice through a body of work that challenges the prevailing representations of race, gender, and class. Defined by the use of photography, installation, film, performance and textile, her remarkably diverse and radical practice questions dominant ideologies and historical narratives created and disseminated within science, architecture, and mass media. Published in the context of her solo exhibitions at Barbican Art Gallery London and Kunstmuseum Basel, this book brings together a selection of Weems’ own writings, lectures, and conversations for the first time, providing personal insights into themes such as the consequences of power, artistic appropriation, music as inspiration, history-making, and the normative role of architecture.

Now available in paperback, this definitive book explores the multidisciplinary career of one of the most experimental and pioneering artists of the 20th century.Encompassing the entirety of Isamu Noguchi's work in sculpture, ceramics, photography, architecture, design, as well as the artist's playscapes, gardens and stage sets for modern dance and theatre performance, this survey explores Noguchi's creative process and lesser-known aspects of his practice, his engagement with a wide range of mediums and cultures, and his innovative achievements over six decades.Brimming with imagery and contributions from an international range of authors, this book helps readers grasp the diversity and patterns of Noguchi's work both in situ and in galleries. Archival photographs of the artist's studios offer glimpses into his experimental attitude towards sculpture. Themes of harmony and dissonance, which were central to his practice, are explored in a series of essays that consider the artist's dual heritage, the Japanese American experience, his worldwide travel and his many influences. It also pays tribute to Noguchi's fruitful collaborations with creatives from a range of industries, such as R. Buckminster Fuller, Martha Graham and Louis Kahn.Throughout the monograph Noguchi's own words provide a critical backdrop towards understanding an artist who embraced many schools of thought, and whose entire life and career set an example for partnership and cooperation across artistic, political and cultural boundaries.
