Arthur Conan Doyle, född 1859 i Edinburgh, död 1930, var en skotsk läkare och författare, mest känd för sina böcker om mästerdetektiven Sherlock Holmes och doktor Watson. Doyle skrev 56 noveller och fyra romaner om Sherlock Holmes. Den andra fläcken är en novell från 1904.

Ett brev har försvunnit från utrikesministerns kassaskåp och ett storkrig hotar hela Europa om det inte hittas.Den brittiska premiärministern besöker därför själv Sherlock Holmes för att anlita hans hjälp.   Brevet har försvunnit utan några som helst spår och utan att det finns några misstänkta. Mästerdetektiven tvingas därför utnyttja hela sin list för att lista ut vem som är tjuven – och stoppa brevet från att hamna hos fiendemakter. Den här berättelsen skrevs av författaren Arthur Conan Doyle, (1859–1930), och publicerades första gången på engelska år 1904 med titeln ”The Adventure of the Second Stain”. Arthur Conan Doyle var ursprungligen läkare och skapade rollfigurerna Sherlock Holmes och doktor Watson med några av sina kollegor och lärare som förebilder.     Den här svenska texten publicerades i novellsamlingen ”Den återuppståndne Sherlock Holmes” år 1930. Översättningen gjordes av svensk-amerikanen Alfred Wingren (1881–1928).
