1900-talet började vid ett pyramidformat stenblock nära sjön Silvaplanersee i de schweiziska alperna på 1880-talet. Det var där Friedrich Nietzsche fick den grundläggande idén till Så talade Zarathustra. Profet Zarathustra har kommit till människorna för att deklarera Guds död, men också förkunna vad som måste ersätta religionen: Övermänniskan. Nutidens människa måste göra upp med sina illusioner och sina förljugna moralbegrepp, kasta sina fördomar om sig själv övervinna sig själv. Med en stil som lånar drag av Gamla Testamentet och andra antika texter, siktade Nietzsche på en tillräcklig höjd i språket för att kunna bejaka sin mest utmanande tanke, idén om »den eviga återkomsten«. Så talade Zarathustra [Also sprach Zarathustra, 1883-1885] är en av den västerländska filosofins mest klassiska och mest omstridda skrifter.
