Originally published in 1988, Policing by the Public opened up an entirely new field within criminology and the sociology of deviance. The authors focus on the nature of informal social control in both villages and urban centres to show the kinds of policing people do for themselves, within their communities, in an endeavour to curb crime and deviance.

Taking as the basis for their study both a rural and an urban community, Joanna Shapland and Jon Vagg are able to counter many of the existing myths about these areas. Beginning with a description of the kinds of problems people experience in their own neighbourhoods, they explore who watches what, who intervenes, and the stereotypes of ‘troublesome’ people and situations that emerge. This study sheds important light on the nature of concern and fear about crime and disorder, the use people want to make of the police and, significantly, the kind of policing they get.

Mikael och hans flickvän har gjort slut. Hon har flyttat och Mikael bor ensam kvar i lägenheten. Han är mycket ledsen.

Även grannen fru Björk har flyttat från sin lägenhet. Där flyttar en ny granne in. Samira. Hon kommer som en frisk fläkt med andra vanor, andra dofter och maträtter än dem Mikael är van vid. Han blir omtumlad och förälskad.

Mycket positivt kommer att hända men det blir inte riktigt som Mikael hade trott.

"Operation: Brandvägg" är den tredje av Andy McNabs mycket framgångsrika romaner om agenten Nick Stone. Nick, som har ett förflutet som SAS-soldat, jobbar numera åt den brittiska underrättelsetjänsten. Hans specialitet är topphemliga uppdrag som den engelska regeringen på inga villkor vill bli officiellt sammankopplad med. När handlingen börjar ligger Nick risigt till hos den brittiska underrättelsetjänsten. Hans förra uppdrag blev ett pinsamt fiasko och några nya förfrågningar har inte kommit. Pengarna börjar tryta och Nick nappar därför på ett frilansuppdrag åt en helt annan typ av kund – en av Englands största privatbanker. Inom bankvärlden har man på senare tid med stor oro noterat att London blivit centrum för den ryska maffians penningtvätt. Det rör sig om enorma belopp, och en av de personer som tilldragit sig särskilt intresse är ryssen Valentin Lebed. Åtskilliga miljoner pund passerar genom ryssens konto i den aktuella banken, som börjar frukta att polisen snart ska slå till och göra en kontroll. Nu vill man övertala Lebed att flytta affärerna till en annan bank – eller att öka omfattningen så att risken blir mer godtagbar. Och det är där Nick kommer in i bilden. Planen är att Nick ska kidnappa ryssen då denne besöker Helsingfors och föra honom till S:t Petersburg, där förhandlingarna sedan ska föras. För en tilltalande summa, drygt en miljon dollar, åtar sig Nick nu att hjälpa en dataexpert in i en anläggning i finska Lahtis. Väl där behöver dataexperten få tid på sig att mjölka datorn på en speciellt eftertraktad programvara. Men uppdraget är inte riktigt vad Nick tror och det får mycket blodiga följder.
