Structural Analysis Systems: Software—Hardware Capability—Compatibility—Applications, Volume 2 is a practical guidebook on structural analysis systems and their applications. It provides detailed information about a specific software, its postprocessor capabilities and limitations, computer-aided design connection, and compatibility with the most common computers. Several practical examples from industry with computer and user cost are given. This volume consists of 17 chapters and begins with a description of AFAG, a dual finite element analysis program based on the flexibility method. The discussion then turns to the AQUADYN system, designed primarily to reduce the hydrodynamics problem to a linear integral equation for large floating or immersed structures. The following chapters focus on other structural analysis computer programs such as BOSOR4 and BOSOR5, INFESA, MEF/MOSAIC, RCAFAG, and STRUGEN. Some general purpose and special purpose finite element programs used for stress analysis of composite materials are also considered. This book will be a useful resource for practitioners in scientific and industrial disciplines such as mechanical or civil engineering, informatics, applied mathematics, and computer science.

Structural Analysis Systems: Software—Hardware Capability—Compatibility—Applications, Volume 1 is a practical guidebook on structural analysis systems and their applications. It provides detailed information about a specific software, its postprocessor capabilities and limitations, computer-aided design connection, and compatibility with the most common computers. Several practical examples from industry with computer and user cost are given. This volume consists of 22 chapters and begins with a brief description of the ADINA 84 system and its finite elements, material models, and solution capabilities. The discussion then turns to the analysis interpretive treatise and its database concept; the ANSYS program for engineering analysis; and the structural analysis capabilities of the boundary element analysis system BEASY. The following chapters explore other structural analysis programs such as DEFOR, FLASH, KYOKAI, PAFEC, and PANDA. General purpose finite element and boundary element computer programs for structural and solid mechanics applications are also described. This book will be a valuable resource for practitioners in scientific and industrial disciplines such as mechanical or civil engineering, informatics, applied mathematics, and computer science.

Structural Analysis Systems: Software—Hardware Capability—Compatibility—Applications, Volume 3 is a practical guidebook on structural analysis systems and their applications. It provides detailed information about a specific software, its postprocessor capabilities and limitations, computer-aided design connection, and compatibility with the most common computers. Several practical examples from industry with computer and user cost are given. This volume consists of 20 chapters and begins with a description of ALSA, a general purpose finite element computer program for accurate large order structural analysis. The discussion then turns to BEFE, a general purpose program for the static analysis of structures and solids using the finite element method, the boundary element method, or a combination of the two. The following chapters focus on other computer programs such as BEWAVE, CASTEM, FEMFAM, FEMPAC, and OSTIN for applications ranging from finite element analysis to seismic analysis. This book will be a useful resource for practitioners in scientific and industrial disciplines such as mechanical or civil engineering, informatics, applied mathematics, and computer science.

Advances in Surface Treatments provides information on technologies, applications, and effects of surface treatment processes on different materials. The text is composed of papers that are presented at the AST World Conference, ""Advances in Surface Treatments and Surface Finishing"", held in Paris in December 1986. The book is divided into six parts; each of which discusses a different topic in the field of surface treatment. These topics include thermal and thermochemical surface treatments; mechanical surface treatments and their effects; quality control of surface treated materials; surface finishing; surface coating; laser surface of hardening materials; and the relationship of surface treatment with the environment. Topics such as metallic coatings and special surface treatments are also covered in the book. The text is recommended for engineers who are not yet familiar with surface treatments as well as those who wish to contribute to the research in this field.

Residual Stresses presents a collection of articles that provides information regarding the use of surface treatment systems. It discusses the developments in the technology and application of surface treatment. It addresses the influence of minor stresses on the performance of materials. Some of the topics covered in the book are the introduction to self-equilibrating stresses existing in materials, the stresses that form as a consequence of welding, the stresses made by machining, and the mechanical generation of self-stresses. The analysis of the stresses caused by thermal and thermochemical surface treatments is covered. The minor stresses in composite materials are discussed. The text describes the stresses in uranium and uranium alloys. The Trepan or ring core method, centre-hole method, and Sach''s method are presented. A chapter of the volume is devoted to the measurement of residual stresses. Another section of the book focuses on the application of shot peened plates to residual stress distribution. The book will provide useful information to mechanics, engineers, students, and researchers.

The use of lasers for the working and treatment of materials is becoming increasingly common in industry. However, certain laser applications, for example, in welding, cutting and drilling, are more widely exploited than others. Whilst the potential of lasers for the surface treatment of metals is well recognised, in practice, this particular application is a relative newcomer. The 24 papers in this volume present the latest research and engineering developments in the use of lasers for processes such as surface melting, surface alloying and cladding, and machining, as well as discussing the properties of laser-treated materials.
