This work examines class and its representation in Victorian literature, focusing on the emergence of the lower middle class and middle class responses to it. The author analyzes portraits of white collar workers, both men and women, who laboured under disparaging misperceptions of their values, abilities, and cultural significance, and shows how these misperceptions were both formulated and resisted. The analysis includes canonical texts like Dickens's "Little Dorrit" and Gissing's "The Odd Women" as well as less well known works by Dinah Mulock Craik, Margaret Oliphant, Amy Levy, Grant Allen, H.G. Wells, Arnold Bennett, and May Sinclair.

Reviews of United Kingdom Statistical Sources are comprehensive and authoritative surveys of the economic and social statistics for the United Kingdom. They are indispensable to anyone who needs to gain a thorough understanding of the sources for the study of the area under consideration. This volume is concerned with the key area of investment in research and development activity. It considers the approaches adopted to the measurement of the level and nature of R&D. The real levels of commitment to R&D form strategic information for business enterprise and governments who are increasingly concerned about quality competition. In particular it reviews expenditure and manpowere measures of R&D activity. The detailed listings are preceded by definitions of R&D related to the sciope and limitations of the data collected. All those working on technological change and industrial economics will need this book.

In recent years, the importance of carotenoids as light harvesting and photoprotective compounds of the photsynthetic apparatus has become apparent. In particular, advances in caratenoid photochemistry have led to significant developments in our understanding of the mechanisms of photsynthesis. This volume is a comprehensive study of the biology, biochemistry and chemistry of carotenoids in higher plants, algae and phototropic bacteria. Emphasis is placed on the photochemistry of carotenoids and the techniques used to study them. Other chapters focus on the nature and distribution of carotenoids in photosynthetic organisms, their biosynthesis and molecular biology, herbicidal inhibition of carotenogenesis and a review of the xanthophyll cycle.

A journalist on the Japan Chronicle for eleven years, the author collected in this volume the most significant current events for discussion. They include the financial crisis of 1927, hostilities with China and in particular Manchuria, Japan’s booming manufacturing industry, Japanese nationalism, Japan’s new empire and its place within the Far East and East Asia. Written from a Western perspective, the volume nonetheless presents a balanced view of Japan and its behaviour which only close observation and dealings with the Japanese people could make possible.

Originally published in 1976, this is a book about tropical soils written from the point of view of the field soil scientist. In includes a discussion of methods of soil survey in less developed countries, and its role in land development planning. Whilst primarily directed at those concerned with, or training for, field studies of soils in the tropics, the book was also aimed at non-specialists, including agriculturalists, economists, and planners, as well as anyone with a wish to understand the significance of soils in agriculture and economic development.

Each of the 20 chapters in this text is written by leading experts in the area of carotenoid research and gives a comprehensive overview of a particular topic in the field. The book is organized into five sub-areas: (1) biosynthetic pathways and the distribution of carotenoids in photosynthetic organisms; (2) structure of carotenoid-chlorophyll protein complexes; (3) electronic structure, stereochemistry, spectrochemistry, spectroscopy, dynamics and radicals; (4) eco-physiology and the xanthophyll cycle; and (5) model systems. Correlations between the photochemical behavior of carotenoids in vitro and in vivo are discussed. The various contributions review the basic hypotheses about how carotenoids function and give details regarding testing different molecular models using state-of-the-art experimental methodologies.

Having more in common than their deaths on the same day in 1997, the late Cheddi Jagan of Guyana and Michael Manley of Jamaica both represented a radical perspective in modern Caribbean politics. Jagan and Manley each had a bold and creative ability to connect labor and politics and made it their priority to minimize poverty and inequality and to enhance the welfare of the Caribbean's disadvantaged and dispossessed. Caribbean Labor and Politics looks closely at the legacies of Jagan and Manley and their ramifications for the political and economic struggles of the Caribbean region and the world. This edited volume brings together a variety of studies on the lives, works, and intellectual and practical contributions of these two stalwart political leaders. The chapters focus primarily on Jagan's and Manley's years as heads of state of their respective countries and also encapsulate their pre-political years - mainly their growing-up experiences and their organizational work in the labor movement. The core contributions of these men are characterized in terms of their pivotal struggles toward the realization of what we term the ""working-class project.

Significant developments in recent years have led to a deeper understanding of the role and function of carotenoids in photosynthesis. For the first time the biological, biochemical, and chemical aspects of the role of these pigments in photosynthesis are brought together in one comprehensive reference volume. Chapters focus on the photochemistry of carotenoids in light harvesting and photoprotection, the nature and distribution of carotenoids in photosynthetic organisms, their biosynthesis, the herbicidal inhibition of carotenogenesis and the `xanthophyll cycle'. Throughout details are given of the various methodologies used. A detailed appendix provides physical data for the major compounds. Carotenoids in Photosynthesis is an invaluable reference source for all plant scientists.
