Whose fault is it that the artist counts for so little in the public mind? Has it always been thus? Is there something wrong, perhaps, with the nature of the art work being created in America? Is our system of education lacking in its attitude toward the art product? Should our state and federal governments take a more positive stand toward the cultural development of their citizens? These are some of the provocative questions which Aaron Copland raises and answers in Copland on Music.

"Explaining" music is not an easy matter, although most writers on music appreciation have approached the issue either from an educational standpoint or from a music criticism standpoint. But this book represents the composer''s own point of view. Listening to music is very simple for a composer and it should be the same for others. However, if the need arises for some explanation, the composer believes that he is more entitled to give his word to the listener than he should get from listening. The author may be wrong in his opinion, as an innovative artist may not be able to remain neutral in his treatment of musical issues in the same way that a music teacher who is far from innovative can. But it seems that it is worth the risk on his part, because when he helps others listen to music well, he works at the same time to spread musical culture..
