Laryngeal Manifestations of Systemic Disease synthesizes current knowledge about voice dysfunctions associated with various disorders. The authors review pathophysiology of systemic diseases and their effects on phonation, with summaries of current literature. Clinicians will benefit from the unique case studies, with photos, to supplement various chapters.Difficulty with the voice is often the first manifestation of systemic disease. Because of this, familiarity with laryngeal manifestation of systemic disease is important not only for otolaryngologists and phoniatrists, but also for family practitioners, internists, medical students, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurse clinicians, speech-language pathologists, singing voice specialists, acting voice specialists, voice teachers, and others entrusted with the care, education, and health of the human voice. This book is intended for all such professionals, and for patients, particularly professional voice users, who want to know as much as possible about their instrument and conditions that might affect it adversely.

Obesity and Voice: Current Views and Future Trends examines obesity-related voice research and suggests future research trends on the link between weight loss, weight gain, obesity, and phonation. Obesity is becoming one of the leading causes of disabilities and death. This unique text highlights the various means by which excessive weight, and weight loss, may jeopardize voice quality and endurance. All three components of voice production, the respiratory system and abdominal back and thoracic muscles as the power source, the vocal folds as the oscillator, and the vocal tract as the resonator, are targets of anatomic and systemic obesity-induced changes. Consequently, phonatory effects of obesity are inevitable.Considering the epidemic nature of obesity, obesity-related voice research is a critical topic for anyone interested in conditions affecting the voice, especially professional voice users and physicians.

Dysphonia, or change in voice quality, can have a devastating effect on both the physical and emotional state of cancer patients. Meeting the vocal needs of cancer patients allows physicians to care for the entire patient and can have a dramatic impact on the overall quality of life of afflicted individuals. Non-Laryngeal Cancer and Voice explores the literature on voice problems in cancer patients, with a particular emphasis on how both the disease and treatment can affect the voice. This text offers valuable information for a range of professionals involved in treating patients with non-laryngeal cancer, including laryngologists, speech-language pathologists, singing specialists, oncologists, and surgeons, as well as patients. By providing comprehensive information on disease- and treatment-induced dysphonia, the book can also act as a resource for voice professionals who develop common cancers and want to understand the potential voice consequences of the cancer and its treatment. The initial three chapters of Non-Laryngeal Cancer and Voice provide basic information about the voice for non-laryngologists. Each of the remaining chapters focuses on a common type of cancer, such as lung cancer and breast cancer, and its unique effect on the voice.

This book reviews the emerging role of blue laser as a new treatment modality. Laser surgery has revolutionized the treatment of patients with voice disorders. The choice of laser is based primarily on the characteristics of the laser such as wavelength, mode of delivery and spot size, and on the type of pathology that is being treated. Recently, a new laser with hybrid characteristics, namely cutting and hemostatic, has been introduced as the new generation of photoangiolytic lasers. This new laser—the blue laser with a wavelength of 445 nm—is gaining popularity as an alternative to the traditional KTP laser. The book begins with a review of lasers in laryngology, which is followed by a discussion of anesthesia considerations in office-based and OR-based laryngeal surgery. Subsequent chapters detail the surgical steps needed to be able to perform office-based blue laser procedures safely, including the mode of application and the use of adjunctive surgical procedures. These chapters present colored illustrations of various cases of laryngeal pathology before and after treatment. Video-recordings of surgeries performed in-office and in the operating room using the blue laser are included. Finally, the authors cover rare applications of blue laser therapy in laryngology. This is an ideal guide for otolaryngologists and laryngologists, as well as speech-language pathologists, phoniatricians and other voice therapists and trainers.

This book synthesizes the current literature on the effects of vaping on voice and discusses the pathophysiology of voice symptoms in affected patients. The detrimental impact of e-cigarette smoking on various systems in the body, including those that affect voice production, is also reviewed. E-cigarette smoking has been shown to impair pulmonary function, which jeopardizes the power source for voice production. It has been associated with an increase in sinonasal and oral symptoms, thus altering voice resonance and quality. Vaping has been linked to reflux disease and esophagitis, putting the defenseless lining of the larynx and pharynx at risk of injury by the gastroduodenal refluxate. Providing insights on the adverse effects of e-cigarette smoking on the phonatory apparatus is of paramount importance, particularly in professional voice users who rely on their voice to make a living. E-Cigarette Smoking, Voice, and Health is addressed to all medical doctors, interns, and health care providers, and in particular to otolaryngologists, laryngologists, speech-language pathologists, and voice therapists.

With the reform in laryngology practice toward office-based laryngeal surgery, many laryngeal procedures are now performed in-office, thus sparing patients the need for general surgery and the morbidity associated with direct laryngoscopy. Among these procedures is steroid injection in patients with various voice disorders. Numerous reports indicate that intralesional steroid injection leads to complete or partial disease regression of vocal fold nodules, polyps, Reinke’s edema, and cysts, among other benign lesions. Intralesional steroid injection is also used for the treatment of vocal fold scars to enhance vocal fold malleability and function, and for the management of laryngo-tracheal stenosis to improve breathing and prolong surgery-free intervals. Office-based laryngeal steroid injection is also an effective adjunct treatment modality to other types of office-based laryngeal procedures, such as laser therapy.Atlas of Office-based Laryngeal Steroid Injection provides an overview of office-based laryngeal injection of steroids in the management of benign lesions of the vocal folds, vocal fold scars, subglottic stenosis and many other laryngeal inflammatory conditions as a result of systemic diseases. The reader will have access to close to 150 images and 12 video-recordings of surgical cases that were treated in-office using different approaches for injection. It compiles pre, intra, and post-operative endoscopic images of the larynx in patients with voice disorders treated in-office with steroid injections. This atlas is ideal for otolaryngologists, laryngologists, fellows and residents, speech-language pathologists, phoniatrists, and voice therapists.
