Grown primarily by the smallholder farmers in tropical and subtropical regions, pigeonpea is pivotal to subsistence agriculture in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The last two decades have witnessed several research breakthroughs in pigeonpea. Following soybean, pigeonpea became the second food legume crop for which the whole genome sequence made available for use in genetic research and breeding. Since then, there have been tremendous efforts to develop and implement cutting-edge technologies for improving pigeonpea. These include genome sequencing of the wider germplasm sets, development of pangenome, mapping of economically important traits, multi-omics studies, and gene editing, among others. Given this, our book Designing Pigeonpea Genome for a Future-Ready Crop explores the current trends in pigeonpea research together with underscoring potential future directions and the challenges that lie ahead.
Features
Presents the achievements of genomics research and molecular breeding of pigeonpea Provides current status of using wild relatives for pigeonpea improvement and optimized strategies to accelerate identification and incorporation of new genetic variation in breeding programs Presents the significance of mutation breeding in pigeonpea varietal improvement and future opportunities for integrating mutation-based techniques with cost-effective high-throughput approaches Discusses growing access to muti-omics datasets, pangenome diversity and genomic prediction studies and their relevance to future varietal development Demonstrates applications of generation advancement techniques such as speed breeding to accelerate breeding decisions and genetic gain in pigeonpea Follows the scope of brining heritable genetic changes for improving pigeonpea’s response to biotic and abiotic stresses through implementation of modern gene-editing methodsThe different chapters in this book have been contributed by the experts in the field. The book will serve as a comprehensive and reliable source for researchers and academicians and inform policy decisions.

This book covers all aspects of hybrid breeding technologies applied for crop improvement in major field crops. The different male sterility systems such as genetic male sterility (GMS), cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), cytoplasmic and genetic male sterility (CGMS), and male sterility induced by the photoperiod (PGMS), temperature (TGMS), and chemicals are discussed in detail. The different chapters in this book provide a timeline of the key breakthroughs witnessed in the field of plant male sterility technologies, their application in hybrid breeding, and the relevance to the current need for food security.
In-depth insights into the genetic and regulatory mechanisms of plant male sterility have been presented. This includes discussion on a variety of molecular players that induce male sterility and rescue male fertility in the hybrid plants. To enhance this book’s appeal, more emphasis has been given on the modern emerging approaches such as construction of heterotic pools that could boost hybrid breeding for enhanced crop performance amid climate change and growing population worldwide.
This book is a guide for growers and industries related to field and horticultural crops. Further, it is a useful reference for plant breeders, researchers and extension workers, and students. The material can also be used for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

This contributed volume explores the latest breakthroughs in genetic and genomic resources for enhancing biotic stress responses in grain legumes – including minor ones. It covers the advances made to date, including gene identification, transcriptomics, proteomics, transgenics, genome editing, genomic selection, epigenetic breeding, and speed breeding related to different biotic stresses. Authored by crop-specific experts, the chapters in this book are essential resources for those directly involved in improving grain legume crops.
Legumes play a vital role in ensuring food and nutritional security, enhancing soil quality, and promoting environmental sustainability. Rich in protein, they are essential in preventing hunger and malnutrition while adding to dietary diversity. However, as these crops are commonly grown in marginal lands with poor inputs, they are highly susceptible to biotic stresses such as diseases and pests, which can cause significant yield losses. This book consolidates all available knowledge about genetic and genomic aspects of biotic stress responses in various grain legumes.
It is a must-have resource for all stakeholders involved in grain legume improvement. Whether you are a breeder, pathologist, biotechnologist, seed production specialist, market manager, graduate or post-graduate student, or any other industry professional, this book serves as an excellent guide to help you stay at the forefront of grain legume improvement.
