Virtual colonoscopy is a rapidly developing technique that promises to be safer, more economical, and less intrusive than conventional diagnostic tests for colon cancer. Despite the attention that virtual colonoscopy is receiving among medical professionals, many lack an understanding of the basics of this cutting-edge procedure. Renowned radiologist Dr. Abraham Dachman and a distinguished group of international contributors have prepared a fundamentals book that fills this void. This practical handbook fully explains the essentials of this state-of-the-art technique to radiologists, gastroenterologists, radiology residents, and technologists. Key topics include how to perform and interpret a virtual colonoscopic examination, accuracy, and radiation dose. Illustrations reinforce major concepts. The practical design and current content of this guide make it a frontrunner among CT colonography introductory texts.

It is my pleasure to present the “fundamentals” version of Atlas of Virtual Colonoscopy, which was first published in 2003 in two parts. The first, which is reprinted here, consists of nine expertly authored chapters that serve as an e- cational module and reference for a rapid review of critical areas of study. S- entific advances in research, particularly the publication of clinical trials and the gradual acceptance of virtual colonoscopy in nonresearch settings, have created a demand for this information. Yet only limited educational venues are available for those seeking courses, tutorials, and published study material. The atlas from which these chapters are derived, remains the only text of its kind on the topic, and in spite of advances since initial publication, its content remains largely up to date and relevant. This is due in part to several factors. The original text was updated shortly prior to submission, and Springer did an outstanding production job of publishing the book quickly. The authorship of the atlas is broad based, with top international researchers in the field as contributors. Because the book is written by individuals involved in cutting-edge research, it includes infor- tion that has only subsequently appeared in the peer-reviewed literature. For - ample, computer-aided diagnosis is well covered in the atlas, even though c- mercialization of this software is not expected until next year. Thus, several topics are ahead of their time, thus keeping the contents relevant.

Atlas of Virtual Colonoscopy thoroughly revises and updates Abraham Dachman’s bestselling first edition. Joined in this edition by co-editor Andrea Laghi, Dr. Dachman has expanded the focus of the text to cover fundamental topics of this rapidly evolving technology, including the history of virtual colonoscopy, a review of clinical trial data from throughout the world, and a presentation of clinical background information. Also included are chapters covering patient preparation and tagging, performing and reporting virtual colonoscopy, viewing methods, MR colonography, and computer aided detection. The second part of the text presents an atlas of high-resolution images with detailed explanations of teaching points, covering normal anatomy; sessile, pedunculated, diminutive and flat lesions; masses; stool and diverticula; and common pitfalls. Atlas of Virtual Colonoscopy is a valuable resource for all radiologists and gastroenterologists interested in learning the fundamentals of this exciting technique.
