Denna volym omfattar första delen i ett större arbete, trebandsverket Al-Kitab ("Boken") utgivet mellan 1995 och 1999. "Boken" är en omfattande fantasirik rekonstruktion av den störste klassiske arabiske poeten al-Mutanabbis liv och verk. Bokens första sju kapitel, där vi får följa al-Mutanabbi på hans tidiga vandringar ledsagad av "berättarens" röst, skiljs åt av tre korta "Intervaller" och sex "Marginaler". I denna bok (som består av fyra föreläsningar hållna vid Collège de France, 1984) sammanfattar Adonis över ett kvarts sekel av forskning om arabisk poesi och kultur. Mihyar är både undergångens och nyskapelsens profet. Han tecknas till stor del i negationer: han är "tvivlets såningsman", han åkallar "guden som sliter sönder sig i mina steg", hans ord är "vindar som uppviglar livet". Men han är också en lidelsefullt irrrande människa, en som har sin boning i själva sökandet, en ständig gränsöverskridare på spaning efter ett land bortom ont och gott, "en värld som börjar vid världens udde". Förtrogen med underjorden, med vanvettet är han en omstörtare som talar med blixtens stämma, han förebådar "vägrans syndaflod" men också en katharsis ("som om Historien tvådde sig i mina ögon") och en ny värld i det fördolda: Jag skapar åt de havande nätterna ett fosterland av rötternas aska. Adonis poetiska verk har fått erkännande som ett av vår tids mest uppseendeväckande. Det har också under mer än tre decennier följts av en reflexion över skrivandets villkor och betydelse i arabvärlden. De essäer som presenteras i denna samling erbjuder läsaren kvintessensen av ett tänkande som är noga med att påminna om att den mänskliga självaktningens och demokratins försvar börjar med den totala respekten för människans skaparförmåga. Denna bok skiljer sig avsevärt ifrån de historiska, sociologiska eller politiska studier som hittills försökt kartlägga skeendena i arabvärlden utifrån. Alltid angelägen om att välkomna stödet från en förnyande tankeströmning (t. ex. den arabiska mystiken), ger han oss här ett grundläggande verk för förståelsen av vår egen kultur och för att vi till slut skall förstå vad Medelhavets båda stränder har att lära av varandra. Dessa tjugosex essäer skrivna mellan åren 1961 och 1992 avslutas med ett samtal mellan Jean-Yves Masson och Adonis.

"Boken - platsens gårdag nu" är en poesins resa genom den arabiska historien, en resa som påminner om Dantes vandring i Den gudomliga komedin. Men olikt Dante väljer Adonis att beskriva helvetet härnere på jorden, det helvete där araberna levde, tänkte och skrev ned sina alster. Samtidigt som han berättar om en historia där religion och politik skulle förbli sammantvinnade, låter han smärtan och sorgen förvandlas till en episk saga där pennans och svärdets män får sina historiska konturer tecknade och ifrågasatta. De dödas ord får nytt liv tack vare poesin och av minnets vita fläckar skapar poeten den tystnad som behövs för diktens födelse och därmed den väntade förnyelsen där ... det vänliga, klara kretsloppet kring det som döljs och det som yppas, kring längtan efter klargöranden, har fått mig att svära jorden trohet. "Boken - platsens gårdag nu" utkom på arabiska i tre delar mellan åren 1995 och 2002. Verkets polyfona struktur och dess spännvidd över femhundra år av arabisk kulturhistoria saknar motstycke inom den moderna arabiska litteraturen. Som vägvisare väljer Adonis att följa den störste av alla arabiska poeter, al-Mutanabbí. Det finns ett tydligt syfte bakom Adonis’ val av al-Mutanabbís liv och öde för sin odyssé. Den helhetssökande vision som denne skald gjorde anspråk på kolliderade med både gängse trossatser och rådande poetiska konventioner. Enligt sägnen förlänade detta honom även hans öknamn, al-Mutanabbí, som betyder "den som utropar sig till profet". Mellan politikens religiösa polityr och dess världsliga syften hade poesin en vågmästarroll att spela i en kultur där politik och religion gick hand i hand. Jag föreställer mig en ikon utan kyrkor, moskéer eller tempel. Jag föreställer mig en ikon av terrasser, vars ljus också är dess öde och över vilka en förälskad måne hänger. I dess händer lyser en frihetens sol i ständig hänryckning. Jag föreställer mig en ikon som i poesin ser början och slutet på sin pilgrimsfärd. Ali Ahmad Saïd Esber föddes den första januari 1930 i Qassabin i Syrien i en enkel familj. Vid 17 års ålder fick han en första dikt publicerad i en tidning under pseudonymen Adonis, en fenicisk gud som symboliserat växtlighetens återfödelse. Han har alltsedan dess förblivit detta namn trogen. Hans stora och mångsidiga verk har belönats med många litterära utmärkelser i bl.a. Libanon, Turkiet, Italien, Tyskland och Frankrike och översatts till många språk. På svenska har ”Sånger av Mihyar från Damaskus”, ”Detta är mitt namn”, ”Bönen och svärdet”, ”En introduktion till arabisk poetik” samt första bandet av ”Boken – Platsens gårdag nu” getts ut av Alhambra.
