Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,0 (A), Leeds Metropolitan University (Leeds Business School), course: International Business, language: English, abstract: The desire to attract inward investment is one of the few industrial policies pursued consistently by successive UK governments over the past twenty five years. (Pain, N.) It is widely recognized that foreign direct investment (FDI) may play a significant role in helping to transfer leading-edge skills, technologies, management styles and other best practices to host economies. (Potter, J. & Moore, B. & Spires, R., 2003) However, research that has assessed the benefits (and costs) of attracting foreign direct investments into host states and regions demonstrates that foreign firms, even within the same industry sector, may differ considerably in their ability to contribute to host regions' economies. (Potter, J. & Moore, B. & Spires, R., 2003) This work will assess the impact of Multinational Enterprises on the British economy . With regards to Daniels, J. & Radebough, L. (2004) "e;a company that has a worldwide approach to markets and production is known as an MNE. It usually undertakes nearly every type of international business practice."e; For the purpose of this work a MNE will further be defined as a company who owns and controls assets. The report is fundamentally structured into three parts. First there will be given a brief overview about foreign direct investment flows into the United Kingdom. The second part will analyse the cost and benefits of FDI for the United Kingdom both in theoretical and empirical terms. Based on the assessment the last section will suggest policy implications. The work is based on secondary research to a large extent.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 2,3 (B), Leeds Metropolitan University, course: EU Policy & Business, language: English, abstract: 1. IntroductionFor many centuries Europe was torn by the antagonism of power. During the world wars a united Europe seemed like an inconceivable illusion. But utopia became reality. Now, 15 years after the fall of the Berliner wall Eastern countries are joining the European Union. The EU enlargement on 1 May could be the beginning of a modern fairy tale. On this day the European Union opened its doors to another 75 million people from the 10 new member states of southern Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Never before in its long history has Europe been more united than nowadays. (Warren, 2004) With a total population of approximately 450 million people the EU has created the world`s largest single market which will have a enormous impact on the world market as well as on the markets of the old member states. (MDR, 2004)The EU enlargement obviously impacts the established political order of the EU, however it is now - despite doubtlessly existent risks - broadly seen as a great chance in a political, economical and also very much in a cultural way. There has been a big discussion involving all different levels of society and politics about where this is going - and where it will all end. (Wallendorf, 2004)This work will focus on Germany as an old member of the European Union and examine the extent to which the benefits of the 2004 enlargement outweigh the disadvantages. Due to the word limitation the major issues will be mentioned but the attention will focus more on the implication for the German economy, although the issues sometimes interact each other it is not always possible to separate them. The agriculture sector will be left out of consideration. The pictures used in this report are taken from the official homepage of the German Government and the European Commission. [...]

First of all this work, provides a definition of leadership and describe its basis. Furthermore, the common theories and different styles of leadership will be presented. Two points about cross-cultural aspects and important managerial aspects follow it. In the end there will be a case study to show the practical meaning and importance of the topic.

Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 2,3, Leeds Metropolitan University (Leeds Business School), course: EU Policy & Business, language: English, abstract: "e;Was it over the line?"e; - maybe one of the most import questions ever in England's football history. Few if any goal has been discussed more often. At 2-2 in extra time in the 1966 final against West Germany, with eleven minutes of extra time gone, Geoff Hurst shot from fairly close in and the ball hit the underside of the cross bar, bounced down - apparently near the line - and was cleared. The referee awarded a goal after speaking to the linesman. Did the third goal cross the line? It is impossible to know for certain. The final whistle blew. England had won the World Cup at Wembley for the first time (EFL Reading, 2004). Obviously this decision of the referee brought the World cup to England . In politics, where decision have to be made every time, there are sometimes situations of uncertainty. Not always can a decision be made from the comfortable situation that everything is 100 per cent clear and the foreseeable benefit can convince even the hardest doubter. One of these situations for the United Kingdom nowadays is the question if they should join the EMU.
