In spite of considerable attention in recent years, there continues to be a gap between the outcomes of looked after children and those of their peers. There is more to being a good parent than keeping children safe - every child needs to feel that parents are 'there' for them, including children in the care system. The complication for children in care is that those responsible are the elected members and officers of the local authority. With an emphasis on practical tools and training materials, this new edition will support the implementation of corporate parenting across the local authority by focusing on the leadership and commitment that members and officers can provide. This new edition is essential reading for all local councillors and supports elected members and council officers to ensure that they fulfil their role as corporate parents. It sets out the responsibilities of a corporate parent, together with practical exercises and briefings to support effective practice.

Tricksters and Pranksters

This volume represents a contribution to comparative scholarship in Medieval and Renaissance studies in its investigation of the ingenious diversity of roguish practices found in Medieval and Renaissance literature and its recognition of the coherent normative function of tales of tricksters and pranksters. The wide variety of works analysed, from those forming part of the established canon of texts on undergraduate degree schemes to lesser-known works, makes the volume of interest to students and researchers alike. The roguish behaviour of women, priests, foxes and outlaws and the knavery of Eulenspiegel and Panurge are used to illustrate how rituals of inversion and humiliation typical of the medieval carnival are reflected in literary accounts of trickery, and to question whether the restorative function attributed to carnival celebration is equally to be found in the intra-textual and extra-textual outcomes of trickery. This analysis is supported by studies into the trickster in mythology, sociological investigations into the role of disorder, Bakhtinian theories of carnival and the carnivalesque, and theories of black humour.

This book provides original and groundbreaking insights into the development and outcomes of multigenerational workforce strategies in Australian workplaces through the combined lens of age, gender and caring. Based on a large-scale study and real-world case studies with six Australian organisations, it highlights leading policies and practices that promote successful ageing at work, identifies optimal work designs for older workers’ participation, engagement and wellbeing at work, and offers strategies to support workers to combine work and unpaid care at different times in their lives. The book offers essential guidance for those undertaking research on multigenerational workforces, and for managers, human resource staff, diversity and inclusion staff, and other practitioners in organisations seeking to deepen their understanding of age- and gender-inclusive workforce policies and practices in the context of ageing populations and workforces.
