Allan Creighton and Paul Kivel, veteran youth educators and community activists, have revised their classic book on violence prevention for today’s youth. Updating the tools and discussions in the book, the authors maintain the positive message of their successful first edition. They also include detailed suggestions for connecting it to the other components of the Making the Peace program: the Making the Peace, Making Allies, Making Friends, and Days of Respect curricula. Igniting the Hope and Idealism of Youth Without ignoring the many challenges facing teens, the authors emphasize that those who work with youth today have as many opportunities as they do obstacles. Creighton and Kivel use their decades of experience with teens to offer: a framework and vocabulary for teaching violence prevention and social justice road-tested exercises for adult, staff and youth training and development guidelines for facilitating discussions on sensitive contemporary issues These tools have been used successfully in schools, residential programs, after-school and recreation programs, youth detention facilities, and colleges and universities. Designed for students in grades six to nine, this curriculum offers more than 30 innovative class sessions that address diversity (racial, ethnic, and sexual) and violence issues. Each session contains a warm-up exercise, theme information, value clarification, and an experience or activity. Journal writing, critical thinking about history textbooks, role-playing, storytelling, poetry/rap, photographs, illustrations, tables, and whole-school research projects are just some of the tools presented in this hands-on guide to defending against violence in middle school.

Making the Peace is written to help high school students break away from violence, develop self-esteem, and regain a sense of community. It provides photographs, illustrations, exercises, role-plays, in-class handouts, homework sheets, and discussion guidelines to explore issues such as dating violence, gangs, interracial tension, suicide, sexual harassment, and the social roots of violence.
