This collection of essays concentrates on Arab-American writer and artist Etel Adnan. Up until now, there has been no single volume dedicated to her work despite Adnan's increasing recognition and acclaim across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.The essays fall into two sections. In the first, the essays respond to the range of vision and experience in Adnan's writing and art through analysis and appreciation. The second section focuses on responses to and interpretations of Sitt Marie Rose, Adnan's well known novel about the Lebanese war.As a whole, the writings in this work seek to provide a comprehensive look at Adnan's literary and artistic accomplishments through analysis and close readings that place her texts within wider literary contexts.

This book explores the problematic of reading and writing about third world women and their texts in an increasingly global context of production and reception. The ten essays contained in this volume examine the reception, both academic and popular, of women writers from India, Bangladesh, Palestine, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Brazil, Bolivia, Guatemala, Iraq/Israel and Australia. The essays focus on what happens to these writers' poetry, fiction, biography, autobiography, and even to the authors themselves, as they move between the third and first worlds. The essays raise general questions about the politics of reception and about the transnational character of cultural production and consumption. This edition also provides analyses of the reception of specific texts - and of their authors - in their context of origin as well as the diverse locations in which they are read. The essay participate in on-going discussions about the politics of location, about postcolonialism and its discontents, and about the projects of feminism and multiculturalism in a global age.

This book studies the representations of working-class women in canonical and popular American fiction between 1820 and 1870. These representations have been invisible in nineteenth century American literary and cultural studies due to the general view that antebellum writers did not engage with their society's economic and social relaities. Against this view and to highlight the cultural importance of working-class women, this study argues that, in responding to industrialization, middle class writers such as Melville, Hawthorne, Fern, Davies, and Phelps used the figures of the factory worker and the seamstress to express their anxieties about unstable gender and class identitites. These fictional representations were influenced by, and contributed to, an important but understudied cultural debate about wage labor, working women, and class.
