Anders Omstedt är professor emeritus i oceanografi vid Göteborgs universitet. Parallellt med sin forskning om havets dynamik och utveckling har han fördjupat sig i litteratur, psykologi och drömmar och är verksam som drömgruppsledare inom Drömgruppsforum.

This book is about the ocean and about the future. It is written in two modes, a concerned analytical scientific mode and an intuitive artistic mode in which the ocean is given a voice. The disconnect in the relationship between human dependency on and feelings about the ocean is examined in a dialogue between these two modes. The book illustrates how science and the arts can be connected to increase our awareness of the state of the ocean and support behavioural change.  This book is intended for everyone who would like to contribute to the sustainable use of the ocean.

This book provides an overview of major threats to our blue planet. But also tools for connecting facts and values to change our often destructive behavior towards nature. The solutions to achieving an ocean in harmony with man are within us, where compassion, curiosity, empathy, courage, and creativity are needed for sustainable change. Therefore, with this book, I want to arouse your curiosity and give the reader, the courage to face the future better by introducing tools for deep diving into our outer and inner world with many hidden resources.The book brings the reader into humans'' challenges with the ocean and its future. It addresses some of the main questions in the United Nations Ocean Decade initiative that aims to change how humans deal with the ocean. This unique book will stimulate a broad way of thinking by connecting analytical science thinking and intuition. In the book''s first part, art and dreams are used to connect science and art. This knowledge is then applied in part II of the book, written in two modes: a concerned science mode and an intuitive, artistic mode in which the ocean is given a voice. Part III illustrates how science and art can be connected to increase our awareness of the state of the ocean and support behavioral change.

This book demonstrates how analytical thinking and intuition can be systematically connected and trained. It is illustrated by figures and photographs and includes creative and stimulating exercises.

We are living in a world of increasing complexity, in which perceiving reality accurately is increasingly important and difficult. Society’s need to address “global grand challenges” requires that the scientific community initiates inter-disciplinary research programmes. These are often far removed from current programmes, which are usually based on intra-disciplinary science. Improving our understanding of complex problems and communicating this understanding to a large group of people from different backgrounds represents an important educational challenge.

Connecting Analytical Thinking and Intuition stimulates students and scientists to improve their skills in thinking, communicating and learning more about being humans. A guide to connecting analytical thinking and intuition is presented using the “dream group” method developed by Montague Ullman, in which a group of 6–8 people systematically and carefully helps the dreamer to appreciate dreams. The importance of good memory, which can be trained through recalling the dreams, is also discussed in relation to science and literature.

Mounting concern about the influence of humans on climate and environmental conditions has increased the need for multi-disciplinary modeling efforts, including systems such as oceans, costal seas, lakes, land surfaces, ice, rivers and atmosphere.

This unique book will stimulate students and researchers to develop

their modeling skills and make model codes and data transparent

to other research groups. The book uses the general equation solver

PROBE to introduce process oriented numerical modeling and to

build understanding of the subject step by step. PROBE is a general

equation solver for one-dimensional transient, or two-dimensional

steady, boundary layers. By the construction of nets of sub-basins the

book illustrates how the process based modeling can be extended,

complementing three-dimensional modeling. The equation solver has

been used in many applications, particularly in Sweden and Finland

with their numerous lakes, archipelago seas, fjords, and coastal zones.

It has also been used for process studies in the Arctic and in the

Mediterranean Sea and the approach is general for applications in many
