Wer sich in Österreich für zeitgenössische Musik interessiert, kennt Lothar Knessl – und schätzt ihn: als Radiostimme in Ö1, als Dozent für die Geschichte der Neuen Musik und insbesondere des Musiktheaters im 20. Jahrhundert am Musikwissenschaftlichen Institut der Universität Wien oder als Mitinitiator und -gründer des Festivals Wien Modern. Wenig bekannt ist jedoch seine umfangreiche Sammlung an hochinteressanten Zeitdokumenten, die Knessls vielfältige Tätigkeitsbereiche widerspiegeln. Diese Sammlung ist an der mdw (Wiener Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst) für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Sie umfasst weite Bereiche des (vor allem) österreichischen Musiklebens seit der Mitte des vorigen Jahrhunderts, das Knessl mitbestimmt hat. Eine Auswahl unterschiedlichster Objekte (Fotografien, Texte, Noten…), die diese Vielfalt illustrieren, ist in diesem Band zusammengestellt.

Begriffe wie Sicherheit, Freiheit, Risiko waren den Diskursen im Kontext Neuer Musik von Anfang an inhärent. Eine Sicherheitszone in Richtung Freiheit zu verlassen, verlangt ein gewisses Risiko, das wiederum zu Verunsicherungen und Forderungen nach erhöhter Sicherheit führen kann. Das Spannungsfeld zwischen kompositorischer Freiheit und einem Ordnungsbedürfnis des musikalischen Materials, zwischen Kontrolle und radikalem Kontrollverzicht hat die Geschichte der Neuen Musik in sich stets wandelnden Konstellationen bis heute geprägt. Dazu kommen Fragestellungen, etwa ob Kunst heute, so wie die Avantgarden des 20. Jahrhunderts, überhaupt noch verunsichern kann, oder ob das gestiegene Sicherheitsbedürfnis auf politischer Ebene in letzter Zeit sich auf der Ebene der Kunst widerspiegelt. Dieser Thematik bzw. Fragestellungen dieser Art gehen in diesem Band wissenschaftliche wie auch künstlerische Beiträge nach.
