Insisting on the critical value of Latin American histories for recasting theories of postcolonialism, After Spanish Rule is the first collection of essays by Latin Americanist historians and anthropologists to engage postcolonial debates from the perspective of the Americas. These essays extend and revise the insights of postcolonial studies in diverse Latin American contexts, ranging from the narratives of eighteenth-century travelers and clerics in the region to the status of indigenous intellectuals in present-day Colombia. The editors argue that the construction of an array of singular histories at the intersection of particular colonialisms and nationalisms must become the critical project of postcolonial history-writing. Challenging the universalizing tendencies of postcolonial theory as it has developed in the Anglophone academy, the contributors are attentive to the crucial ways in which the histories of Latin American countries-with their creole elites, hybrid middle classes, subordinated ethnic groups, and complicated historical relationships with Spain and the United States-differ from those of other former colonies in the southern hemisphere. Una fabula sobre llegar a conseguir las metas que nos proponemos. Yak es un yak que quiere participar en las carreras de caballos que se celebran en la estepa. Todo el mundo piensa que es una locura, hasta que se rebela como un gran corredor capaz de vencer a casi todos sus contrincantes. Esto provoca una pequena revolucion en la familia, y sus miembros se empiezan a replantear sus tareas y labores.

Es el primer día de cole, pero Matilde no quiere ir montada en su escoba. Su madre insiste en que todas las brujas vuelan en sus escobas, y entonces Matilde lo tiene claro: No quiere ser bruja. Pero ¿qué quiere ser Matilde?

Una jirafa descubre que una de sus manchas parece una hoja y, al escapar de un leon, todas las manchas se le caen del cuerpo. Avergonzada, se aleja de sus companeras y encuentra otros animales: un hipopotamo rosa, un elefante volador... Al final aprendera que no importa ser diferente a los demas.

Gato Negro es un gato callejero, Gato Blanco es un gato casero. Dos gatos diferentes con vidas muy distintas se encuentran casualmente. Desde ese momento comienza una nueva vida para Gato Blanco como gato callejero: aprende a cazar, a disfrutar de una vida sin comodidades y poco a poco va olvidando. Pero tambien comienza una nueva vida para Gato Negro, pues nunca habia tenido un companero con el que compartir sus aventuras cotidianas, siempre habia sido un gato solitario. Hasta que un dia en el parque aparece una nina que llama a Gato Blanco por su nombre, y es el momento en el que debe de tomar una decision: volver a su vida tranquila con los que le quieren o continuar con su vida de aventuras.
