Psychiatric genetics has become ‘Big Biology’. This may come as a surprising development to those familiar with its controversial history. From eugenic origins and contentious twin studies to a global network of laboratories employing high-throughput genetic and genomic technologies, biological research on psychiatric disorders has become an international, multidisciplinary assemblage of massive data resources. How did psychiatric genetics achieve this scale? How is it socially and epistemically organized? And how do scientists experience this politics of scale? Psychiatric Genetics: From Hereditary Madness to Big Biology develops a sociological approach of exploring the origins of psychiatric genetics by tracing several distinct styles of scientific reasoning that coalesced at the beginning of the twentieth century. These styles of reasoning reveal, among other things, a range of practices that maintain an extraordinary stability in the face of radical criticism, internal tensions and scientific disappointments. The book draws on a variety of methods and materials to explore these claims. Combining genealogical analysis of historical literature, rhetorical analysis of scientific review articles, interviews with scientists, ethnographic observations of laboratory practices and international conferences, this book offers a comprehensive and detailed exploration of both local and global changes in the field of psychiatric genetics.

Bigfoot exists. Not necessarily as a biological creature, but certainly as an object around which thousands of Americans organise their lives, analysing evidence, and making knowledge. This book examines the Bigfooting community sociologically. Using concepts from Science and Technology Studies (STS) as well as cultural sociology, Lewis and Bartlett shed new light on what it is to do ‘science’, what it is to behave ‘scientifically’, and where the borders of legitimate scientific practice lie.Through detailed interviews with Bigfooters themselves, this book explores the ways in which the Bigfooting community makes sense of traces and absences to make knowledge claims that are acceptable to those within that community. It also shows how Bigfooters, in the face of scepticism, attempt to render Bigfoot a proper object of scientific inquiry outside of their own circle. This fascinating, accessible, and entertaining reading will appeal to scholars and students of science and technology studies, cultural sociology, and the sociology of mystery, as well as to those interested in the public trust in and understanding of science.

In 2011, Devon County Council outlined plans for a rapid-transit-style rail network, the Devon Metro, to be achieved through improvements to services and facilities, including the opening of new stations. As well as the Great Western Railway main line, the five other active branches centred on Exeter would be incorporated into the scheme. At the western end of the county, Plymouth councillors have for some time also been looking at a tram-style Metro for the city, along with a new station for Plympton and the reinstatement of the line to Tavistock and Okehampton. With vibrant images and informative text, this book explores how the Metro plans have developed line by line since 2011 and what might realistically be achieved in the next decade.

Formed from the renaming of Midland Red East in January 1984, Midland Fox was one of the first to do away with National Bus Company (NBC) corporate red livery, opting instead for a bright-yellow-and-red scheme. It took on Leicester City Transport over restrictions on picking up and setting down passengers within Leicester’s boundaries – and won – and introduced one of the largest minibus operations anywhere in the country. It went from the management buy-out in 1987, which took it out of the NBC, to become a constituent part of the Drawlane Group, later to become British Bus. Services covered the whole of Leicestershire, but Midland Fox buses and coaches could also be seen in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, the West Midlands, Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire, and several smaller operators were bought out. Vehicle purchasing policy tended towards second-hand vehicles, though there were some notable acquisitions of new stock. In 1996, British Bus was sold to the Cowie Group. A year later its bus operations were renamed Arriva, and Midland Fox became Arriva Fox County, which is effectively where the Midland Fox story ends.Andrew Bartlett details the little-known account of this familiar face in the Midlands through his high-quality photographs and unpublished archive images.

With its rugged coastlines, surfing beaches, wild moorlands and busy tourist hotspots, Devon can justifiably claim to have something for everyone. So, what could be better than having a front seat on a bus to make the most of what it has to offer? This book features nine bus routes that can aptly be described as ‘Great’ and ‘Scenic’. Starting in Plymouth, they include a trip on a ferry across the River Tamar to the Rame Peninsula, an open-top bus ride along the sea front past Plymouth Hoe, the coastal route from Dartmouth to Kingsbridge, and the two routes that between them cover the entirety of Torbay. In addition, there is a trip onto Dartmoor in the footsteps of ‘Uncle Tom Cobley and all’ and, in North Devon, a 2¾-hour journey from Ilfracombe across the top of Exmoor, with magnificent views both inland and out to sea, which ends near Minehead. Andrew Bartlett’s stunning selection of images from recent years reflects both the buses and the scenery and his informative text captures a brief history of the routes and attractions along the way.
