Andrey Rybalchenko - Böcker

Andreas Podelski is one of the leading researchers in formal verification and software engineering, in particular automata and formal languages. After a Ph.D. from the University of Paris 7 in 1992 under the guidance of Maurice Nivat, he had research positions at DEC PRL and the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science. He was appointed to a professorship and Chair of Software Engineering at the University of Freiburg in 2006. Over the years, his teams have authored seminal papers presented at key international conferences that have significantly advanced the theory and practice of software model checking and verification at large, while also developing award-winning practical software verification techniques. Andreas has a tireless dedication to distilling an idea to its very essence, challenging his collaborators and students to reach the highest level of academic rigor, and his group has shown a consistent ability to identify and solve the most challenging problems. The contributions in this volume reflect his outstanding achievements as a researcher and mentor.

The 4th International Computer Science Symposium in Russia (CSR 2009) was held August 18-23,2009 in Novosibirsk,Russia, hosted by the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics and Novosibirsk State University. It was the fourth event in the series of regular international meetings, following CSR 2006 in St. Petersburg, CSR 2007 in Ekaterinburg, and CSR 2008 in Moscow. The opening lecture was given by Andrei Voronkov, and four other invited plenary lectures were given by Sergei Odintsov, Wolfgang Thomas, Nikolai Vereshchagin, and Hongseok Yang. This volume contains all the accepted papers and some of the abstracts of the invited speakers. The scope of the proposed topics for the symposium was quite broad and covered basically all areas of computer science. We received 66 papers in total, and the Program Committee selected 29. Yandex provided the Best Student Paper Awards; the recepients of these awards were selected by the Program Committee: - Dmitry Itsykson, "Structural complexity of AvgBPP" - Yuri Pritykin and Julya Ulyashkina, "Aperiodicity measure for in?nite sequences." This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Verification, Model Checking, and Abstract Interpretation, VMCAI 2012, held in Philadelphia, PA, USA, in January 2012, co-located with the Symposium on Principles of Programming Languages, POPL 2012. The 26 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 70 submissions. The papers cover a wide range of topics including program verification, model checking, abstract interpretation, static analysis, deductive methods, program certification, debugging techniques, abstract domains, type systems, and optimization.
