This volume presents the current state of the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) practicum in 13 countries, including Armenia, Australia, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, England, Indonesia, Japan, Malta, Poland, South Korea, Sweden and the USA. Together the contributions offer a unique and contemporary view of how teachers are being educated and brought into the TESOL worldwide community of practice. This is the first publication to present diverse models/frameworks of the TESOL practicum from several international teaching contexts, focusing on exemplary practicum cases in the selected countries.

This textbook serves as a current and comprehensive resource on effective Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for TESOL practitioners in various contexts around the world at various stages in their careers. The practices described by language teachers, teacher educators and professional development providers in this book offer a vision of critical issues to consider when designing and evaluating professional development opportunities. 

Effective professional development requires careful planning informed by the realities of the local context and the specific needs of the teachers. This textbook is designed to support those who provide professional development opportunities by presenting global perspectives on professional development for a range of teaching contexts at different language levels. Each chapter includes a discussion about the type and source of support available in the given context, as well as a reflection on the challenges that exist for both teachers and CPD providers. These insights serve to help CPD designers and providers as they problematize teacher development opportunities in their context. Each chapter concludes with a synthesis of the strengths of CPD in the local context and a discussion of future directions that target opportunities for transformation and improvement.

It is divided into three sections: cognitive aspects of language learning, individual differences, and language learning difficulties and challenging behaviours. Structured in this way, it enables TESOL teacher educators and practitioners to better understand how language learners process and retain new information, improving their overall ability to learn and remember. In addition to supporting TESOL teacher educators and practitioners in promoting effective language learning, this volume explains individual differences among language learners and the importance of developing learners’ emotional, social, and behavioural skills while addressing learning difficulties, disorders, disabilities, and challenging behaviours whenever required. The individual chapters are written in an accessible style to enable readers to explore various psychological concepts in their pedagogical practice by engaging in reflective teaching through action research.
