At about 0600 hours on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 while leading a patrol in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, Corporal Andy Reid, 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, was blown up by a Taliban improvised explosive device (IED). Airlifted back to the UK that evening to the specialist military wing of Selly Oak Hospital it was touch and go for a while. He had lost both legs, the left one above the knee, and his right arm. His left hand had the index finger almost completely removed. Yet he survived and on Remembrance Day 2009, less than a month after being blown up, was reunited with his patrol back in his home base in Warminster. From there he went on to have a pair of prosthetic limbs fitted at the Defence Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court. In 2010 he won the Sun Newspaper''s Military Award. In between times he has cycled from Land''s End to John O''Groats, skydived, and made a number of appearances on behalf of service charities. In this book, Andy sets himself a simple aim: to tell his story. In fact he has not just one, but two stories to tell. The first is the story of Corporal Reid, Burma Company, 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment: Infantry Section Commander and then there is the story of Andy Reid, triple amputee skydiver, cyclist, and charity fund raiser, husband, and new father.

Corporal Andy Reid was an ordinary soldier, serving in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. But his life changed forever on Tuesday, October 13, 2009, when he was blown up by a Taliban improvised explosive device. He had lost both legs and his right arm, while the index finger of his left hand was almost completely removed. Yet he did survive, and less than a month after being blown up, he was reunited with his patrol back in Warminster. He went on to have a pair of prosthetic legs fitted, which allowed him to go on a world cruise with his fiance Claire in 2010. In the same year he was nominated for and won the Sun''s Military Award. In between he has cycled from Land''s End to John O''Groats, skydived, and made a number of appearances on behalf of service charities. Andy''s story demonstrates how, with patience, courage, and determination, hope can triumph over despair. But he has two stories to tell. The first is the story of Corporal Reid, Burma Company, 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment: Infantry Section Commander. Then there is the story of Andy Reid, triple-amputee skydiver, cyclist, charity fundraiser, husband, and father. Andy is acutely aware that for every injured soldier like him, there are many more who have their spirits crushed with despair as they face a lifetime of pain, disability, and impairment. Even those who seem to make a full recovery may not yet exhibit the true extent of their mental injuries. He is not seeking pity or admiration, but he does want to make sure that we, the general public, know, as much as someone who has not been there or been through it themselves can ever know, what opertations in Afghanistan are like, what happens to those who get injured, and what future they might have.

Staring at a screen? Thinking hard? Lacking insights? Struggling to generate ideas? It’s a familiar story in a world where work demands us to deliver more, with less. And you’re probably working on a business challenge right now. Successful problem solving, strategic thinking, insight discovery and idea generation needs structure. But so many people in business (who should know better) approach the design and delivery of creative projects both big and small in a linear, dull and predictable fashion. This is NOT the way.Strategy needs to be facilitated. It’s not enough to run a hot bath and hope for eureka breakthroughs. Innovation teams demand inspiration. Something PowerPoints will never deliver. And creativity needs to be role-modelled. Following process alone will only get you so far. You’re holding the anti-manual (a rule-breaking guidebook) for the mavericks, pioneers, mavens and creative sherpas striving to challenge the status quo. If new thinking is something you find motivating and exciting, then this book is for you. THIS IS NOT THE WAY is a valuable dip-in-and-out source of stimulus, stories, tricks, tools and tips to create wonder and magic in the broken world of work.
