Tropical seaweeds represent a major source of diversity and potential for cultivation. Cultivation of seaweeds has been coined “phyconomy” (derived from phycology and agronomy). One of the world’s most important groups of tropical seaweeds is the eucheumatoids (comprising members of the genera Kappaphycus and Eucheuma). Whilst the biomass from these seaweeds is mostly used to produce colloids (i.e., various carrageenans) trends are changing and new, value-added applications are emerging including bioactives for agriculture, pharmaceutical applications, as well as bioplastics and possibly energy when processed as part of a MUZE (i.e., multi-stream, zero effluent), or biorefinery approach. Phyconomic activities around the production of seaweed biomass provides socio-economic benefits for many hundreds of thousands of global, coastal dwellers around a circum-tropical belt. However, times are changing and the once, repetitive manual aspects of attaching seaweed fragments to ropes and nets is beginning to be mechanized. Whilst it has taken agronomy several thousands of years to develop on land, its phyconomic counterpart is, at best, 50 years old in relation to developments in cultivation of eucheumatoids. Activities around cultivation of these tropical seaweeds can contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.This book contains contributions from many of the world’s authorities on tropical seaweed farming with a focus on the eucheumatoids. There are many lessons learned and best-practice examples which will be of interest to students of phyconomy (phycology), marine science, industrial users of cultivated biomass, as well as practitioners in charge of coastal zone management and ensuring responsible and sustainable socio-economic benefits are derived from marine resources for coastal dwellers.

Phyconomy encompasses the science and arts of both wild harvesting and cultivation of seaweeds. Some of these practices are as ancient as the very earliest uses of selected seaweeds, going back millennia. Other phyconomic practices are some of the most recent developments applied to the selection, breeding and multiplication of strains of resilient and productive cultivated species, specifically selected for the ever-changing marine environment in which they need to succeed. Phyconometrics involves measurement of stocks, impacts of harvesting as well as production, in the sea and on land; providing data on volumes and values of commercial species, some at very large industrial scales.In so much as tropical phyconomy has been covered (with particular attention to eucheumatoids), by the editorial team in other volumes of the DAPH book series, we realised there was also a large world of temperate activities covering micro and macroalgal species which had not previously been collated and presented to the applied phycological, phyconomic community. That has now been rectified! The co-editorial team of Anicia Q. Hurtado, Iain C. Neish and Alan T. Critchley were grateful to receive the additional assistance of Leonel Pereira and the project Temperate Phyconomy began. It soon became evident there was such a wealth of novel information that could be provided from temperate waters around the phyconomic world and indeed so much so that the title expanded to: Advances in Temperate Phyconomy: Algal Harvest and Cultivation in Globally Distributed Temperate Waters.Part I looks at specific topics of phyconomy including wild vs cultivated seaweed species. It dispels some of the myths around get the get-rich-quick seaweed production schemes; it presents some stark facts based in reality on applied phycology and what it takes to obtain quality seaweed biomass for many value-added applications. New developments in phyconomic practices, harvest, cultivation methods and materials, including strain selection and seed bank maintenance are detailed with a specific focus on temperate regions of the world.Part II will follow with another set of exciting developments on temperate phyconomy from around the world of temperate seaweeds of economic value.The book is aimed at all students, researchers, operators and practitioners in the sphere of applied phycology and phyconomy, i.e., both the macro and microalgal worlds - where there is much in common – if you look with eyes wide open. This book collates the latest information on Kappaphycus and Eucheuma seaweeds. The edited volume provides an important companion to anyone studying or working with what is the world’s largest cultivated marine plant biomass. The contributing authors have excelled in providing information on production and present and future uses of these carrageenan-bearing seaweeds. Important elements of taxonomy, distribution and methods of cultivation and processing are presented to the reader in an accessible and easily understood format. The book provides a number of valuable opinions on value addition and MUZE technologies which highlight value-chains associated with these important red algae.
