The global energy crisis is a two-dimensional phenomenon: on the one hand, the gap between a continuously depleting supply capacity of fossil fuel and rapidly increasing demand for energy is fast widening, and, on the other, the burning of fossil fuels intensifies the problem of global warming day by day.
This book explores this global crisis through a regional focus, exploring the issues as they relate to the Indian subcontinent. The book argues that since no source of energy is entirely pollution free, it essential to place greater emphasis on enhancing energy-use efficiency. This requires proper auditing of existing energy use and proper management of future use. Providing the foundation for this argument, the first section of the book examines the root cause of the problem: the supply-demand imbalance of energy. Alongside this, market imperfections in energy pricing are also discussed. The second section of the volume explores the environmental and political dimensions, examining policies in the region designed to provide a sustainable. The third and final sections presents several plausible policy prescriptions to solve the problem.
This book will be of particular interested to researchers of energy economics and policy, sustainability, environmental studies and South Asia more broadly.

Here Anindya Bhukta explores the porous legal relations between traditional knowledge and current intellectual property law. Focusing on aboriginal communities in India, Bhukta explains how India, like other resource-rich countries, has spent millions trying to revoke US-issued patents on knowledge gained from aboriginal communities using existing IPR legislation. He demonstrates that existing IPR laws do not provide full legal protection in such cases - a fact acknowledged by the World Trade Organization when it categorically asked for a sui generis law to be developed for precisely these purposes - and he suggests just such a new law that could offer more robust legal protection for aboriginal communities wishing to capitalize on their own accomplishments. In so doing, Bhukta calls attention to the vital contributions that aboriginal communities make to global development.
Legal Protection for Traditional Knowledgeis a must-read for researchers in economics, development studies, and international law, and especially those with an interest in the intellectual property status of traditional knowledge.

This volume defines and analyzes the Blue Economy, a system that encompasses all the economic activities which are happening in and around the ocean within a sustainable development framework, with focus on countries in Asia. This work is timely, as Blue Economy activities account for a significant share of GDPs in the island and coastal economies in the Asia region, sustaining the livelihoods of one of the largest sections of the world''s population. This book, therefore, assesses how the Blue Economy contributes to these livelihoods from economic and ecological perspectives and analyzes the various types of ecosystem services provided, and how these services are regulated and maintained. While most studies of the Blue Economy focus only on the economic aspects, this book provides ample statistical data to demonstrate why ecosystem services should additionally be considered for the estimation and valuation of the Blue economy. The book is primarily meant for researchers, students, and teachers in the fields of environmental and ocean economics, sustainable development, and ecosystem services, and will be of further interest to policymakers and government officials working in matters related to the Blue Economy and sustainability policy.
