Between the 1760s and 1914, thousands of young Americans crossed the Atlantic to enroll in German-speaking universities, but what was it like to be an American in, for instance, Halle, Heidelberg, Göttingen, or Leipzig? In this book, the author combines a statistical approach with a biographical approach in order to reconstruct the history of these educational pilgrimages and to illustrate the interconnectedness of student migration with educational reforms on both sides of the Atlantic. This detailed account of academic networking in European educational centers highlights the importance of travel for academic and cultural transformations in nineteenth-century America.

In 1960, twenty-one-year-old Berta Zuther left her life in West Berlin behind to join African American missionary Andrew Foster in Ghana, thus embarking on a journey that would span three continents and result in the establishment of schools for the deaf across Africa. Berta and Andrew were both deaf themselves. They got married in Nigeria in 1961 and devoted their lives to building educational opportunities for deaf Africans—founding 32 schools, churches, and community centers in 13 African countries between 1957 and 2009.This volume places Berta Foster at the center of interest, a woman who has remained largely invisible in existing accounts of her husband’s pioneering educational mission. While Andrew Foster has been celebrated as an icon in Black and Deaf American history, Berta's crucial contributions as administrator and driving force not just behind their German support network have been overlooked. Drawing on private family archives, including hundreds of personal letters, and interviews with family members as well as former students and colleagues from deaf communities in Ghana and Nigeria, this book explores how deafness, gender, and race intersected in the lives of an interracial couple working across cultural boundaries during the Cold War era.Deaf German Missionary Berta Foster (1939-2018) and Deaf Education in West Africa will be beneficial to students of Deaf History, Disability History, Diversity History, West African History, German History, American History.

Contributions are arranged into three sections that highlight the motivations and characteristics connecting a certain set of agents, thinkers, and intellectuals: the first, Re-ordering Worldviews: Rebellious Thinkers, Poets, Writers, and Political Architects; the second, Crafting Connections: Strategic and Ideological Alliances; and the third, Cultural Mastery in Foreign Spaces: Evolving Visions of Home and Identity.These essays expand categories and suggest patterns at play that have united individuals and communities across the African diaspora. They highlight the stories of people who, from their intercultural and often marginalized positions, challenged the status quo, created strategic (and at times, unexpected) international alliances, cultivated expertise and cultural fluency abroad, as well as crafted physical and intellectual spaces for their self-expression and dignity to thrive.What, for example, connects the eighteenth-century Igbo author Olaudah Equiano with 1940s literary figure Richard Wright; nineteenth-century expatriate anthropologist Antenor Fermin with 1960s Haitian émigrés to the Congo; Japanese Pan-Asianists and Southern Hemisphere Aboriginal activists with Jamaican-born Marcus Garvey; or Angela Davis with artists of the British Black Arts Movement, Ingrid Pollard and Zarina Bhimji?
