Der Dandy ist eine janusköpfige Figur: einerseits in Habitus und Mentalität dem 18. Jahrhundert verhaftet, andererseits die adligen Standesschranken durchbrechender Einzelgänger. Das Brüchigwerden der Adelswelt schnitt den Typus des Gesellschaftsdandys von seinem angestammten Terrain ab und drängte ihn noch stärker in die Vereinzelung. Auch der Zusammenbruch der ‚großen Welt‘ vor und nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg stellte für den Dandy eine massive Existenzbedrohung dar. Die verwandte Spielart des Künstlerdandys repräsentiert eine mondäne Bohème und existiert in ihren verschiedenen Amalgamierungen bis heute. Der Band untersucht Erscheinungsformen und Transformationen sowie neue Selbstbehauptungsstrategien des Dandys im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert und stellt Biographien bekannter Dandys vor.

Originating in the collaboration of the international Research Network “Gender in Antisemitism, Orientalism and Occidentalism” (RENGOO), this collection of essays proposes to intervene in current debates about historical constructions of Jewish identity in relation to colonialism and Orientalism. The network‌’s collaborative research addresses imaginative and aesthetic rather than sociological questions with particular focus on the function of gender and sexuality in literary, scholarly and artistic transformations of Orientalist images. RENGOO’s first publication explores the ways in which stereotypes of the external and internal Other intertwine. With its interrogation of the roles assumed in this interplay by gender, processes of sexualization, and aesthetic formations, the volume suggests new directions to the interdisciplinary study of gender, antisemitism, and Orientalism.

Ein eindrückliches Zeugnis für das irritierende Zugleich von Nähe und Distanz, das den deutsch-jüdischen Diskurs zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts prägteRainer Maria Rilke hat sich zeitlebens für das Judentum interessiert, sich aber kaum dazu geäußert - eine Ausnahme stellen seine 1921/22 an Ilse Blumenthal-Weiss gerichteten Briefe dar, die bisher nur in Teilen veröffentlicht waren und nun erstmals in der Form eines dialogischen Briefwechsels publiziert werden. Ergänzt wird der Briefwechsel um Rilkes Beitrag zu der 1906 veranstalteten Rundfrage "Zur Lösung der Judenfrage" sowie um Texte von Blumenthal-Weiss, die als Shoah-Überlebende 1947 in die USA emigrierte. Lange vor der Rilke-Philologie beschäftigte sie sich dort in Vorträgen und Artikeln mit Rilkes Verhältnis zum Judentum (sowie anderen Aspekten seines Lebens und Werkes) und blieb eine kritische Beobachterin des deutsch-jüdischen Diskurses der Nachkriegszeit.
