A celebration of 75 years of publishing at Thames & Hudson – a delight for bibliophiles, historians, art lovers and fans of the T&H brand. In 1949 Walter and Eva Neurath founded Thames & Hudson with a clear aim: to create a 'museum without walls' through books that would make art and scholarship accessible to all. This volume – the most comprehensive history of an illustrated publisher ever undertaken – tells through its books the history of a progressive, groundbreaking company that, 75 years later, remains true to those core founding ideals. The story of Thames & Hudson is the story of the illustrated book. This special publication, divided into three chronological chapters, provides a comprehensive delve into the company's history. An introduction and three essays by historian Anna Nyburg take us from its origins in Vienna on the cusp of the Second World War to the 1960s and a change in management, and to the new millennium and beyond. Thames & Hudson's rich output of groundbreaking and award-winning titles – ranging across the subjects of art, archaeology and architecture; history, design, photography and fashion – is celebrated in stunning pictorial spreads, as beautiful and compelling as the books themselves. The Art of the Book will be a valuable resource for those interested in the history of bookmaking and T&H's impact over the years, and a must-have for collectors, enthusiasts and anyone with an appreciation for the art and evolution of publishing.

«With its meticulous documentation, this multifaceted volume brings a range of individual lives and networks to the fore, outlining their inestimable contributions to British culture. It is an inspiring and timely intervention into the fields of exile and childhood studies, demonstrating just how inextricably the two are linked.»(Professor Kiera Vaclavik, Director of the Centre for Childhood Cultures, Queen Mary, University of London) The essays that make up this book cover a diverse range of subjects, all broadly on the theme of child refugees from Nazism in Britain. The book’s three sections – on displacement, children in art, and children in education and play – indicate the various topics considered in the study. The authors come from different academic fields – including German and Austrian exile studies, art history, language and literature, and education – so each chapter offers a depth of research as well as adding to the breadth of the overarching theme. Thus far, there has been no study dedicated to examining both the experience of these refugee children and those who worked with them, and yet they and their own children live on, marked in different ways by their experience and making their own mark in British art and literature too.

Yearbook Volume 19 continues an investigation which began with Arts in Exile in Britain 1933-45 (Volume 6, 2004). Twelve chapters, ten in English and two in German, address and analyse the significant contribution of émigrés across the applied arts, embracing mainstream practices such as photography, architecture, advertising, graphics, printing, textiles and illustration, alongside less well known fields of animation, typography and puppetry. New research adds to narratives surrounding familiar émigré names such as Oskar Kokoschka and Wolf Suschitzky, while revealing previously hidden contributions from lesser known practitioners. Overall, the volume provides a valuable addition to the understanding of the applied arts in Britain from the 1930s onwards, particularly highlighting difficulties faced by refugees attempting to continue fractured careers in a new homeland.Contributors are: Rachel Dickson, Burcu Dogramaci, Deirdre Fernand, Fran Lloyd, David Low, John March, Sarah MacDougall, Anna Nyburg, Pauline Paucker, Ines Schlenker, Wilfried Weinke, and Julia Winckler.
