This volume investigates a galaxy of diverse networks and intellectual actors who engaged in a broad political environment, from conservatism to the most radical right, between the World Wars. Looking beyond fascism, it considers the less-investigated domain of the 'Latin space', which is both geographical and cultural, encompassing countries of both Southern Europe and Latin America. Focus is given to mid-level civil servants, writers, journalists and artists and important 'transnational agents' as well as the larger intellectual networks to which they belonged. The book poses such questions as: In what way did the intellectuals align national and nationalistic values with the project of creating a 'Republic of Letters' that extended beyond each country’s borders, a 'space' in which one could produce and disseminate thought whose objective was to encourage political action? What kinds of networks did they succeed in establishing in the interwar period? Who were these intellectuals-in-action? What role did they play in their institutions’ and cultural associations’ activities? A wider and intricate analytical framework emerges, exploring right-wing intellectual agents and their networks, their travels and the circulation of ideas, during the interwar period and on a transatlantic scale, offering an original contribution to the debate on interwar authoritarian regimes and opening new possibilities for research.

Drawing on Jeffrey Schnapp’s conceptual framework, this book examines political exhibitions organised by the Portuguese Estado Novo between 1934 and 1940 as spaces where regimes manipulated national history to legitimise their authority, crafting myths of origin and narratives of national pride.The Portuguese Estado Novo invested heavily in political exhibitions to consolidate its power and project a favourable image abroad, making them a key instrument of propaganda and cultural diplomacy. By analysing national exhibitions, as well as Portugal’s participation in the international fairs in Paris (1937), New York, and San Francisco (1939), this book explores how the regime’s efforts to construct a shared past reinforced its consolidation and provided a unifying foundation for its internal factions. It also examines how Salazarism, navigating both missteps and successes, designed its pavilions to develop visual propaganda and a teleological narrative aimed at fostering loyalty and devotion to its core values. By bridging the local and the global, Showing Salazarism demonstrates how the Estado Novo leveraged these events to forge alliances, influence international audiences, and strengthen ties with the Portuguese diaspora – embedding its cultural strategy within the broader framework of the interwar period.This volume fills a critical gap in the historiography of Salazar’s Portugal while offering fresh insights into the study of political exhibitions and will be of value to students and scholars alike interested in the studies of fascism and European history.

This book offers a fresh perspective on right-wing and left-wing revolutions, as well as political uprisings against the liberal order in interwar Europe, focusing on how they were politically used in the public sphere and exploring how these events were narrated and visually represented to justify new authoritarian systems and generate consensus around them.Bringing together both senior academics and early-career scholars, the volume examines ten emblematic case studies combining original research on overlooked aspects of well-known events with analyses of lesser-studied, or even ‘peripheral’ cases.
