Religionsökonomie analysiert einerseits Religion mit wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Modellen und untersucht andererseits kritisch ökonomische Theorien, die selbst mit einem ideologischen Anspruch auftreten, wie gutes Management oder effizientes menschliches Verhalten auszusehen hätten. Die vorliegende Einführung stellt erstmals systematisch diese junge Teilperspektive der Religionswissenschaft dar. Beschrieben werden historische Positionen wie Adam Smith und Max Weber, relevante Theorien wie die neue Institutionen- und Verhaltensökonomie, sowie die grundlegenden kulturökonomischen Praktiken produzieren, distribuieren und konsumieren. Zahlreiche Beispiele veranschaulichen, wie Ökonomisierung, Neoliberalisierung und wirtschaftliche Krisen auf Religionskulturen einwirken.
