Harper first studies the songs of the two great models of the time, Martin Opitz and Paul Fleming, following this with an analysis of the song-books and collections from three regions: the North-East, Central Germany, and the North. The procedure is thus both historical and geographical. The texts of these songs are examined in relation to structural principles, thematic range and stylistic treatment. Harper establishes common features and regional variations of this genre, which involves love-poetry, songs of manners with colourful portrayals of everyday life, and comic songs in a lower stylistic register. Particular attention is paid to the work of Albert and Dach in Konigsberg, Finckelthaus, Schirmer, Krieger and Schoch in Leipzig and Dresden, and Rist, Voigtlander, Zesen, Greflinger and Stieler in the Hamburg region. Where appropriate, the book assesses the role of musical settings, while not seeking to offer technical insights into musical matters. Die Lyrik des sächsischen Dichters David Schirmer (1623-1687) gilt als eine beträchtliche Leistung in der deutschen Lyrik der Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts. Nach dem Studium in Halle, Leipzig und Wittenberg kam Schirmer 1650 nach Dresden, wo er zunächst als für die Divertissements zuständiger Hofdichter, dann als Hofbibliothekar, sein Leben verbrachte. Die beiden Werke, die zum ersten Mal im Faksimile in einer modernen Edition vorgelegt werden, umfassen den Hauptteil seines lyrischen Werkes. Die »Singenden Rosen« von 1654 sind eine Liedersammlung, zu der der Hofmusiker Philipp Stolle die Vertonungen beitrug. Die »Poetischen Rosen=Gepüsche« von 1657, eine ''Ausgabe letzter Hand'' seiner bis dahin verfaßten Lyrik, enthalten u.a. Lieder, längere Alexandrinergedichte, einen Sonettzyklus, Madrigale und Epigramme. Den beiden Bänden wird vom Herausgeber ein ausführlicher kritischer Apparat beigesteuert, der folgende Teile einschließt: Darstellung von Schirmers Biographie und Gesamtoeuvre, Druckgeschichte, Textvarianten, Druckfehler, Kommentar, Bibliographie der Originaldrucke und Handschriften, Register der Gedichttitel und -anfänge.

Christian Brehme (1613-1667) gilt als ein markanter Vertreter der sog. Leipziger Studenten-Poeten, eines Freundeskreises, der sich in den Jahren nach 1630, also mitten im Dreißigjährigen Krieg, um Paul Fleming sammelte und der frühbarocken Dichtung in Deutschland mit ihrer schäferlich-burschikosen Gesellschaftslyrik wichtige Impulse gab. Mit Brehmes Gedichten eröffnen die »Deutschen Neudrucke« eine Reihe von reprographischen Neu-Editionen aus diesem Kreis. Der Band enthält mit der Gedichtsammlung von 1637 und den »Weltlichen Gedichten« von 1640 die wesentliche lyrische Hinterlassenschaft des Autors, sowie eine monographische Abhandlung des Herausgebers zu dessen Biographie und Gesamtwerk.
