In 1992, students of Bert Green and Angas Hurst conceived the idea of a meeting to commemorate their contributions to Mathematical Physics and to celebrate their passing the milestone of three score years and ten.In designing the scientific program there were two objectives. The first was to cover the full breadth of research in Mathematical Physics at Adelaide University since the founding of the Department of Mathematical Physics with the appointment of Professor Green in 1952. The second was to seek original contributions in areas of current interest and rapid development. The underlying theme was the interaction of mathematics and physics in the key areas of relativity, quantum field theory and statistical physics.The contributions to this volume consist of papers describing the historical development of ideas in which Adelaide mathematical physicists have played a role, surveys, research announcements and of course original research. The influence of Bert and Angas on the research results and themes developed in this volume is easily seen through the historical or survey material or because some papers describe work in which one or other is a past or indeed present collaborator.

This book contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Nonperturbative Methods in Quantum Field Theory, held in Adelaide, Australia, in February 1998. Lattice gauge theory and calculations based on the use of Schwinger-Dyson equations feature prominently, with further contributions in the areas of variational and functional techniques, strong interaction phenomenology and chiral perturbation theory. QCD in the infrared regime as well as QCD at finite temperatures and densities is the subject matter of a number of papers, while other authors explore chiral symmetry breaking in QCD as well as in other field theories.

One of the most fundamental questions in understanding strong interaction is whether or not quarks and gluons play a significant role in nuclear systems. At high densities we need to explore the existence and nature of a deconfinement phase transition. At lower densities we wish to study the changes in the properties of a hadron particle as mass and electroweak form factors, when it is immersed in nuclear matter. Finally, we may even ask whether the internal structure of the nucleon plays a role in the binding and properties of finite nuclei.On the theoretical side the issues raised here are of concern to a very broad community, from those working in traditional many-body physics, to those building effective field theories, to those working in lattice QCD. Experimentally, there are many accelerators, mature, new and planned, which can offer insight into this field — from SLAC to HERA, COSY, CELSIUS and TJNAF. This workshop brought together key figures from all areas of theoretical and experimental physics concerned with this fundamental problem.

CP violation is essential to understanding the universe in which we live. Without it there can be no dominance of matter over anti-matter. New experimental facilities, such as the B-factories, and new experimental techniques promise the first real advances in our understanding of this phenomenon since its discovery in the mid-60's.The Workshop on CP violation brought together representatives of all the major experimental collaborations and key theorists. The result is an excellent introduction to the directions in which the field will move in the next few years.

This volume is centered on recent developments in the exploration of hadronic structure through lepton scattering, in the description of hadron physics directly from lattice QCD and non-perturbative QCD models, and in efforts to strengthen the links between these activities. Specific topics that are covered include: parton distribution functions, polarized structure functions, generalized structure functions, nuclear effects, quark-hadron duality, electromagnetic form factors, structure functions and hadron properties from lattice QCD, and QCD models based on the Dyson-Schwinger equations.
