Now back in print in an updated edition, this stunning, award-winning visual odyssey encapsulates the essence of Tom Waits’ enigmatic persona and Anton Corbijn's distinctive photographic style.Spanning over three decades, this extraordinary book showcases the enduring collaboration between a legendary musician and a renowned Dutch photographer—a creative symbiosis that has produced some of the most memorable images in rock and roll history.Structured chronologically, it traces Waits’ evolution as an artist alongside Corbijn’s development as a photographer whose starkly evocative images capture Waits in a multitude of settings, from gritty urban landscapes to intimate studio sessions. Through Corbijn’s lens, Waits emerges not just as a musician but as a multifaceted character, embodying the spirit of the troubadour, the poet, and the raconteur. A final section features Waits’ own photography along with poems, stories, and collages. As Jim Jarmusch comments in the introduction, “A collection of images of Tom Waits seen through the eyes of Anton Corbijn is something special, some kind of vortex, an axis of evil geniuses.” Tom Waits fans, photography enthusiasts, and anyone seeking insight into the joy of collaboration will find much to discover in this inspiring partnership between two artistic visionaries and friends.

What happens when new masters pick up where old masters left off? On the occasion of the bicentenary of the Mauritshuis in The Hague, the museum asked contemporary photographers to reflect on the permanent collection. Which masters capture their imagination? How do they interpret 17th-century art?The result: 16 new works by 16 contemporary photographs, including Erwin Olaf, Rineke Dijkstra, Anton Corbijn and Stephan Vanfleteren, one for each room in the Mauritshuis. The new works will be displayed alongside the 17th-century works that inspired them and will be put equally next to each other in this luxury book. The photographers were entirely free to select what they wanted to work with. For some it was a painting, for another a detail from a painting, or even an entire room in the museum. Expect to see original and surprising reflections on 17th-century art: counterparts, commentaries, alternatives. None of the photographs is a remake of the original painting. One thing is certain: you will never look at Rembrandt, Vermeer or Steen in the same way.Text in English and Dutch.

This book analyses Anton Corbijn's diverse work through parameters such as image composition, structure, lighting, and viewer perspective, while also establishing references to art history. Artists in front of Corbijn's camera appear undisguised and authentic, often achieved by placing his subjects in unusual settings. Corbijn, who emphasises his desire "to be close to the creative people with the camera," creates a unique, recognisable tone in his work. His melancholic, dark images reveal the vulnerability and transience of humanity, offering a glimpse behind the celebrity facade.Text in English and German.
