The urban spaces of the future This book compiles speculative contributions on disruptive, nonlinear futures of urban agglomerations, based on research conducted on urban innovation at the Department of Special Topics in Architecture at the Institute of Architecture of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Students, alongside renowned experts, also comment on questions concerning our urban future. The novel reading structure, which is realized and suggested by the concept of the book, is also nonlinear: thematic, graphic cross-references enable contextual reading in addition to continuous reading. The enhancement of the printed book with digital augmented reality (AR) components offers networked, simultaneous reading on several levels and thus reflects the complexity of urban systems. New approaches in urbanism A spectrum of speculative glimpses into the urban future Contextual reading structure: enrichment of the printed book with AR components

Architecture is a fundamentally future-oriented discipline that seeks to reconcile today’s visions with the realities of tomorrow. Futures, understood as evidence-based spatial projections, are materialized in imaginaries. As collectively and socially constructed frameworks of concepts, models, representations, and narratives, they constitute imaginary worlds within which societies seek to position themselves in the world. They lend meaning to our stories and influence the ways in which challenges are perceived and opportunities are articulated and implemented. At the intersection of architectural practice and academic research, this publication examines the significance of imaginaries and bridges the gap between speculative thinking and applied architectural knowledge. Examines the links between speculative thinking and applied architectural knowledgeReveals fresh perspectives on the research and design processEnables the exploration of hypothetical worlds, uncovering new paths to forms of knowledge and insight
