It appears offstage in studies of national systems in which national and professional identity; political organization; policy formation and public/private markets are all viewed as contained within the borders of the state.Fabricating Europe is concerned with the new possibilities to be discerned and imagined in the European public and institutional spaces and discourses in education and the lack of impetus within the broad area of educational studies to meet the task of creating analyses and responses.

Las profesoras y profesores que hoy habitan las escuelas son la generación del cambio. Durante su vida profesional, la educación y la enseñanza van a cambiar profundamente. Aunque existe un gran malestar debido a la falta de reconocimiento del profesorado y a toda la incertidumbre que rodea su futuro, tenemos que ser capaces de un gesto de esperanza. No se trata de un optimismo ingenuo, sino de una esperanza que se aprende y se cultiva en común. Lo más importante es que seamos capaces de liberar el futuro, subtítulo adoptado para este libro, inspirado en Iván Illich. Nadie sabe cómo será el futuro y ni siquiera merece la pena intentar adivinarlo. Pero tenemos la obligación de hacer todo lo que esté en nuestras manos para no cerrar la posibilidad de que exista futuro, para garantizar la libertad a las próximas generaciones.El libro gira en torno a estas ideas fuerza: a) que la educación pública es la herramienta más potente (quizás la única que nos queda) para construir un futuro en libertad; b) que se precisa un nuevo contrato social para la educación que asuma como principios básicos la justicia social, la dignidad humana y la diversidad cultural; c) que no hay nada que sustituya a un buen profesor; d) que la escuela del futuro solo será posible si se concibe como un bien público que exige la cooperación y el compromiso de todos.
