Global change threatens ecosystems worldwide, and tropical systems with their high diversity and rapid development are of special concern. We can mitigate the impacts of change if we understand how tropical ecosystems respond to disturbance. For tropical forests and streams in Puerto Rico this book describes the impacts of, and recovery from, hurricanes, landslides, floods, droughts, and human disturbances in the Luquillo Mountains of Puerto Rico. These ecosystems recover quickly after natural disturbances, having been shaped over thousands of years by such events. Human disturbance, however, has longer-lasting impacts. Chapters are by authors with many years of experience in Puerto Rico and other tropical areas and cover the history of research in these mountains, a framework for understanding disturbance and response, the environmental setting, the disturbance regime, response to disturbance, biotic mechanisms of response, management implications, and future directions. The text provides a strong perspective on tropical ecosystem dynamics over multiple scales of time and space.

El objetivo del libro es interrogarnos y problematizar los lugares, las estrategias y las resistencias que van configurando otras subjetividades políticas, entendiendo que la "institución" de la ciudadanía queda estrecha y anacrónica para encarar estas tareas. Entre otras cosas, esto nos lleva a preguntarnos, por un lado, cómo puede reclamarse un derecho por fuera del derecho, sin derecho a reclamar por un derecho, o cómo sin una "ciudadanía", exigir por los derechos como ciudadano. Por otro lado, nos desafía a buscar nuevas coordenadas de análisis políticos que den cuenta de los procesos en los que aquellos que no son reconocidos o contados, al decir de Rancière: los "sin parte", se convierten en actores centrales de transformaciones contingentes y disruptivas que evidencian la necesidad de un nuevo comienzo, un nuevo orden en el reparto de nuevas agencias de politicidad.En este sentido, nos interesa pensar en los márgenes de las nuevas configuraciones de la ciudadanía, a partir de los procesos conflictivos que se producen en todo el mundo (Hong Kong, París, Bolivia, Haití, Chile, Venezuela, Barcelona, Colombia, Ecuador, etc.) para buscar comprender desde las particularidades de cada lugar el rol (-otro) que juega la ciudadanía manifestándose.
