None of the Indian theatre-makers under study built their works directly on the Euro-American model of postdramatic theatre, but many have used its vocabulary and apparatus in innovative, transnational ways. Their principal aim was to invigorate the language of Indian urban theatre, which had turned stale under the stronghold of realism inherited from colonial stage practice or prescriptive under the decolonizing drive of the ‘theatre of roots’ movement after independence. Emerging out of a set of different historical and cultural contexts, their productions have eventually expanded and diversified the postdramatic framework by crosspollinating it with regional performance forms. Theatre in India today includes devised performance, storytelling across forms, theatre solos, cross-media performance, theatre installations, scenographic theatre, theatre-as-event, reality theatre, and so on. None of the Indian theatre-makers consciously built their works on the Euro-American model of the postdramatic, but many have used the theatre model in innovative, transnational ways. Offering a critique of dominant power structures in India, this book showcases how the rise in censorship and intolerance of dissent has brought forth new forms of political and aesthetic radicalism. Theatre has found many ways to perform the radical as a form of resistance, intersecting with other art forms as well as the political itself in its performative articulations. Chapters include discussions of the performance of protest; creation of an alternative worldview through indigenous rituals and cultural festivals; world-making through transformative encounters; devised plays and documentary theatre as tools of dissent; radical imperatives of care in animated videos and short films; scenography and the actor’s body as sites of resistance, the performance of faith as survival in a hostile world and conversations with artists. The radical in contemporary Indian theatre and performance is shown to lie in creating a new ‘transgressive aesthetic,’ often formally hybrid, to project alternative perspectives and possibilities.Balancing theory, context and performance analysis, this volume brings out an underexplored aspect of 21st-century Indian theatre and performance. This book of selected works exhibits a significant part of Carlos A. Coelho’s research activity in multivariate statistics, focusing on topics related to likelihood ratio tests. After two introductory chapters, including a biography and an overview of the contributions and related research, the articles are presented in their chronological order of publication, thus also showing the research path followed by the author. The volume shows how likelihood ratio tests useful in multivariate analysis can be developed, and how in most cases exact distributions can be obtained for their statistics in a manageable form. Furthermore, it shows how extremely sharp asymptotic (near-exact) approximations can be found in the remaining cases. Circular distributions are also addressed and, more generally, distributions of products of random variables. The book will be useful for advanced students as well as researchers and practitioners who deal with likelihood ratio tests in multivariate analysis.
