Obwohl sowohl christliche als auch heidnische Autoren bezeugten, dass es mithrische Elemente übernommen hat, taten dies laut Attilio Mastrocinque nur einige gnostische Christen. Er wendet ein, dass die Ideologie und die Religion der Römischen Reichs bessere Hinweise darauf geben, wie man diese Frage angehen sollte, und behauptet auch, dass Virgil sich als wichtiger für das Verständnis der mithrischen Ikonographie herausstellt, als das Avesta. The concepts of memory and experience have stimulated interest in a wide range of recent cultural studies. In the history of scholarship on religion in Mediterranean antiquity, scholars have focused on the emotional dimension of both terms by employing the concepts of 'Christianity' and its derivative, 'oriental religion'. Only recently analyses in this field started focusing on interaction and individual experience. Research initiatives at Palermo and Erfurt have taken up this lead and brought together a group of scholars testing such approaches for new perspectives on the history of religion in the Greek and Roman world. This volume reviews the cognitive and emotional dimensions of such experiences in their diverse local, social, and ritual contexts. Memory likewise opens a window onto the interaction of individual and society. Contributions address the individual processes of memorialization and remembrance. They analyse the collective evocation of memories and their shaping of individual memory.

Bona Dea, also known as Fauna, was a very important goddess of female initiations in Rome, and several features of hers were shared by similar goddesses in ancient Italy. This e-book sheds light on two hitherto unexplored features: the Dionysiac character and the Lydian style of her festivals. The wife of a consul took on the attitude and the attire of Omphale as the president of Dionysiac ceremonies. Faunus was supposed to precede Bacchus and give fecundity to the bride (i.e. Ariadne), whereas Hercules was thought of as an effeminate musician who created harmony. This was the correct ritual behaviour of prenuptial ceremonies, as it was depicted on many Dionysiac sarcophagi. The iconography of these monuments depicts important features of Faunus and Fauna. Believers are depicted on sarcophagi in the attitude of Bacchus or, in case of women, of either Ariadne or Omphale. A final comparison with initiations among native tribes of Oceania clarifies many rituals of the ancients.

Bei dieser detailreichen Quellenuntersuchung zu den mithridatischen Kriegen handelt es sich nicht um eine durchgehende Darstellung der Ereignisse, sondern vielmehr um den Versuch, die Verquickung der allermeisten Quellen mit unterschiedlichen romischen factiones herauszuarbeiten. Dies fuhrt vor allem zu einer kritischen Bewertung der Hauptquelle, des Mithridates-Buches Appians, in dem sich die sullanische Sicht der Dinge uberdeutlich widerspiegelt. Die intensive Quellenkritik und die systematische Verknupfung der ostlichen Kriegsereignisse mit den politischen Entwicklungen in Rom und Italien sind der Hauptertrag dieser originellen Arbeit.
