Both the European Union and Japan have been major beneficiaries and supporters of the liberal international order, first led by the United States since the end of World War II. During this period, they have emerged as global powers, however, the very order that nurtured their rise is now facing twin threats. First, through authoritarian China’s promotion of alternative models of global governance, and second from a crisis of liberalism, manifested in the policies of President Donald Trump and Brexit. This book explores these challenges faced by both the EU and Japan, providing a multidisciplinary approach to studying the relationship between the two. It analyses their cooperation in terms of security, defence and trade and examines how their shared normative values are ultimately implemented. Having recently concluded an Economic Partnership Agreement and with a Strategic Partnership Agreement in the pipeline, this book asks whether they can convert their latent and modest cooperation into an alternative form of leadership and an antidote to the illiberal tide sweeping the developed world? This book provides an in-depth analysis of the relations between China and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from 1949 to 1989. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, especially from the archive of the GDR’s ruling party, this book examines selected issues and elements of East German and Chinese domestic and foreign policy.

The expansion of India’s security and defence ties with Japan over recent years in particular will continue to be instrumental to keeping Beijing’s territorial expansionism in Southeast and South Asia in check. This volume analyses India’s involvement and engagement in regional and global trade and investment structures and flows in great detail. Die erste und einzige umfassende und detaillierte Analyse ostdeutsch-chinesischer Beziehungen in deutscher Sprache. Die chinesisch-ostdeutschen Beziehungen erlebten im Laufe der Jahrzehnte einige „Höhen“, aber deutlich mehr „Tiefen“. Tiefen und Krisen insbesondere Anfang der 1960er-Jahre, als die Sowjetunion ihrem Vasallenstaat in Ost-Berlin befahl, den ehemaligen sozialistischen Genossen und Waffenbruder in Peking als Gegner und Feind zu behandeln. Das „chinesisch-sowjetische Zerwürfnis“ dann sorgte dafür, dass Ost-Berlin und Peking bis in die späten 1980er-Jahre fast auschliesslich übereinander und nur selten  miteinander sprachen. Dieses Buches stützt sich auf eine Fülle ostdeutscher Archivmaterialien. Dazu gehören Dokumente aus unter anderem den Archiven der Sozialistischen Einheitspartei Deutschlands (SED), des Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit (Stasi) sowie des DDR-Außenministeriums. Zusammen mit umfangreicher Sekundärliteratur und nahezu allem, was in ostdeutschen Zeitungen von den 1950er-Jahren bis 1990 über China geschrieben wurde, untersucht das Buch ausgewählte Themen und Bereiche der innen- und außenpolitischen Strategien Chinas und der DDR und ordnet diese in ihren historischen Kontext ein. Das Ergebnis sind detailliert  dokumentierte Einblicke in folgende Aspekte bilateraler Beziehungen und Konflikte: 1. die bilaterale „Flitterwochenphase“ von 1949 bis Ende der 1950er-Jahre, in der beide Seiten die repressiven Innen-und aggressiven Außenpolitiken des anderen unterstützten und bejubelten – darunter Maos Großer Sprung nach vorn und die Kulturrevolution; 2. die 1960er-Jahre, in denen das „chinesisch-sowjetische Zerwürfnis“  die Qualität der sich rapide verschlechternden bilateralen Beziehungen und Spannungen definierte; 3. die 1970er-Jahre, in denen Peking sozialistische Kameradschaft mit Ost-Berlin durch Handel mit und Hilfe aus den USA und der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ersetzte; 4. die Wiederaufnahme bilateraler Beziehungen in den 1980er-Jahren und die darauffolgende Phase bis zu den Protesten und dem Massaker auf dem Tiananmen-Platz in Peking und dem Zusammenbruch der DDR im Jahr 1989.
