This volume deals with the life and work of Cologne's archbishops in the formative phase of the Colognian metropolitan diocese and its development. They were important pillars of royal and imperial power, shaped the city of Cologne with the founding of monasteries and convents, and influenced the inner structure of parishes. In the late eleventh century, their rule faced a challenge from the slowly emerging citizenry.
