This book gathers a diverse collection of essays analyzing the connections between urban design, sustainability, and climate adaptation. This extensive volume is constructed around four significant themes: urban design and public spaces, renewable energy and building technologies, climate adaptation strategies, and behavioral and policy approaches to climate change mitigation. The first section tests the essential role of urban design in creating resilient, walkable communities and public spaces, digging into topics such as urban agroecology, children's city architecture, and innovative strategies for climate control in urban settings. From the traditional storm water management systems of India to the revitalization of street dynamics, these chapters demonstrate how design can contribute to urban resilience. The second section emphasizes on the area of renewable energy and sustainable building technologies, with a certain stress on how buildings can reinforce zero-energy and low-carbon living in altering climates. The section covers leading inventions such as building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), green hydrogen production, and passive design strategies, granting a roadmap for integrating renewable energy solutions into both residential and urban scales. In the third part, the book surveys climate adaptation strategies that tackle the obstacles caused by climate change. Case studies of urban and architectural solutions reveal how outdoor space geometry, green infrastructure, and hydrophilic design can relieve the effects of severe weather conditions, enhance air quality, and elevate thermal comfort in dry and tropical climates. Ultimately, the book analyzes behavioral and policy tactics to climate change moderation, underlining the weight of sustainable practices at both discrete and institutional levels. Topics such as climate finance, travel adaptation strategies, and the role of universities in urban regeneration accentuate the serious connection between policy, human behavior, and climate action.

This book offers a critical rethinking of digital urban transformation through a planning centered lens. It moves beyond technocentric views to examine how intelligent technologies shape governance, decision-making, and sustainability outcomes. The book explores key areas including housing, mobility, water management, environmental resilience, and digital civic engagement, showing that technology is deeply embedded in institutional and social contexts. It highlights how data driven systems introduce new opportunities for coordination while raising challenges related to ethics, bias, and accountability. By linking digital innovation to planning theory and governance, this book provides a clear framework for understanding how cities can achieve more inclusive and resilient futures.

Due to climate change and urbanization, urban climate change is increasingly prominent with significantly environmental, economic, social, and health consequences. Addressing climate-related risks, threats and disasters in cities to a significant extent means creating resilient, healthy, safe and inclusive built environments. Such an assumption is much truer since cities are the main human settlements of human beings. Typically, urban design is an implementable and tangible pathway to practically deal with the city-climate interactions, while there should be a large transformation from unsustainable urban design patterns towards sustainable ones.Urban Climate and Urban Design is a comprehensive collection of theoretical perspectives and global case study examples focused on three core areas of (i) urban climate monitoring, assessing and forecasting, (ii) mitigation and adaptation strategies, (iii) advanced and emerging design models and tools, and (iv) action plans and policy formulation. This edited volume provides theoretical and methodological references for urban climate research and generates practical implications for mitigation and adaptation capacity improvement. This book will be of interest to a range of researchers from earth and planetary sciences and environmental sciences to engineering, architecture, and urban planning. Beyond them, this book will enlighten policy makers, practitioners, and developers how to properly regulate urban climate through design interventions. We believe this book is promising to narrow the gap in the transition towards climate-resilient cities, and enhance the understanding of new ideas, methods, strategies, and policies.
