Sie begann ein Gesangsstudium, tingelte in Brüssel und Paris durch die Clubs zunächst mit Chansons u. a. von Jacques Brel und Georges Brassens. Der Durchbruch gelang erst, als sie ihre Lieder selbst komponierte – fortan füllte sie die großen Konzertsäle weltweit. Mit ihrem Lied "Göttingen" schuf sie eine Hymne für die deutsch-französische Verständigung, die bis heute nachwirkt.Auf der Bühne überließ Barbara keine auch noch so kleine Geste dem Zufall. Ihre Erinnerungen – angefangen bei einer zum Teil traumatischen Kindheit über Begegnungen in der Künstlerszene bis zu ihrem Aufstieg zur Grande Dame des Chansons – hingegen bestechen gerade durch das spontan Aufgeschriebene, durch das Authentische, Unmittelbare. Der pointierte und auch poetische Stil erlaubt es, mit wenigen Strichen ein wahres Künstlerleben zu evozieren. Ihre Memoiren begann sie 1997 zu schreiben – sie blieben unvollendet.
