”Blasfemisk”, ”subversiv”, ”diabolisk” och ”ateistisk”. Så löd några tidiga omdömen om Baruch Spinozas "Tractatus Theologico­Politicus", "Teologisk-politisk traktat". Detta i Spinozas samtid mycket uppmärksammade och omdebatterade verk publicerades anonymt i Amsterdam 1670 men det blev ändå snart känt vem som författat traktaten. Det var inte första gången Spinoza anklagades för att omfatta irrläror. När han exkommunicerades från sin judiska församling 1656 anklagades han just för att sprida ”heterodoxier”."Teologisk-politisk traktat" utmanade de vedertagna tankemönstren på många sätt. Det är ett både religiöst och politiskt verk, som tar sin utgångspunkt i en för sin tid revolutionerande närläsning av Bibeln. Spinoza vänder sig starkt mot allt han uppfattar som vidskepelse, i synnerhet tron på under­verk, och hävdar att Bibeln måste tolkas utifrån förnuftets principer. Han ifrågasätter den religiösa maktens allmänna tolkningsföre­träde och menar att den religiösa makten och den politiska måste hållas åtskilda om statens syfte ska kunna uppfyllas och bevaras. "Teologisk-politisk traktat" handlar i hög grad även om medborgarnas frihet och formar sig till en stark plädering för demokratin som styrelseskick. Djupt inifrån sin tid talar Spinoza tydligt och tankealstrande till vår. Traktaten, som här är försedd med en orienterande introduktion av Fredrika Spindler, har aldrig tidigare varit översatt till svenska i sin helhet.
